TONIGHT on my @kmhd_jazz_radio show I'm presenting my 8th RADIO DANCE PARTY since the pandemic struck. 7 to 9 pm (PST) 89.1 fm in #Portland Stream it live at kmhd.org . The Evolution of an Enduring Dance-Floor SMASH Record (swipe for photos): . One of the songs I'm spinning during my Spring Shing-A-Ling has become a favorite with northern soul crowds, though the version THEY usually dance to is by British pop star Billie Davis. . The song was written by Jon Hendrick (of Lambert, Hendrick, & Ross) for #LouisJordan who released hit ORIGINAL R&B version of the song in 1953. From there the song split in two directions. In the USA White R&B singer #LillianBriggs released an infection remake of the tune in 1955 and THAT version was immediately covered by the notorious cover artist, #GeorgiaGibbs. . Over in the UK, Annie Ross (sometime singing partner of Jon Hendricks) decided to release HER own record of the song, ALSO in 1955. Ross's version was very similar to the Lillian Briggs. . That brings us to 1967. Brill Building songwriter #EllieGreenwich (who also happened to be a formidable vocalist) recorded HER own soul version of the tune after being inspired by Lillian Briggs years before. The Greenwich version was released in 1967 (It made it to #83 on the Billboard Charts) . Back in the UK in 1967, Billie Davis recorded HER version of the song with a similar arrangement to Ellie Greenwich. The Davis version made it to #33 on the UK charts. . So, although the Greenwich and the Davis version are extremely similar (and both are fantastic), it is the Billie Davis version that has endured. . BUT TONIGHT, I'm spinning Ellie! . * These are the kinds of nerdy deep dive insights I used to try to supply on the regular via my social media until I realized the detailed info kind of turned casual followers off.
