Just to make things clear, you aren't saying that someone's mental illness isn't valid, because of how that person deals with it. You're saying that for someone who has more serious problems... Say... they can't reblog the "My crippling social anxiety and depression makes it hard for me to get out of bed," post because they feel that it mocks their condition. They can't relate to tumblr's idea of "mental illness," because it's not quite true to life for someone who deals with it every day. Yes?

Yes. What I am saying is that I only see one type of self-care celebrated on tumblr, and it is one that decentralizes focus on issues that, as the original statement I was commenting on said, are "grimy." I also think that when there angry/violent/not necessarily nice aspects to someone's mental illness, this is discussed on a "personal" level and not on a more far-reaching scale. This is the exact same argument whites use for people like the Chapel Hill murderer: he's one person who was angry about parking. Not a terrorist who has been militarized by his country's racist patriotism. 

It's very easy to take a person and make them a situation that is self-encompassing, and therefore the more harmful of their neuroses self-regulated, that does not broach any larger issues on the whole. 

I think it's easy for tumblr to take these people with more "serious" problems and individuate them. That's why, as in the original statement, the bit about the mentally ill not being violent is hard for people to understand (or swallow).

Please bug me again if I'm still not clear!

i like myself this year. it took all year to realize who i was as a person, without taking my body into account was amazing. This coming year i will like my body. thats my goal. baby steps. daily.

That is such a fantastic goal to have and I applaud you for it! It definitely takes time, and there will be days where you don't like anything, least of all yourself, but those days will pass. Baby steps (and selfies!) are so important to that goal, and I wish you infinite luck and love throughout the coming year u w u<333

Oh absolutely! I never meant to imply they were mutually exclusive?? Being kind and polite is very important, and I would never promote self love via the means of putting others down or being egotistical. Love yourself and spread that love through your actions!<3
