This year, the Ontario government has gone back and forth on whether or not LGBTQIA2+ identities, consent, and cyber safety are important topics to teach. Although it was recently announced that they will start to put some things back into the sex ed curriculum for older grades, questioning the validity of LGBTQIA2+ students, and keeping the teacher “snitch line” in place, sends a harmful message to youth who are already struggling, and teachers who are trying to make their classrooms safe.

That is why I volunteer as an ambassador for @getrealmovement and am pleased to share their new LGBTQr Code Campaign. It’s a microsite, accessible through QR code technology on t-shirts, pins, and stickers. When the QR code is scanned, it brings you to an educational place where terminology, resources, and answers to FAQs can be accessed by students, teachers, and parents.

It’s not designed to tell anyone what to think, or to be defiant against our government, it’s simply a website where people can tell their own stories, and learn from each other’s struggles. Even someone like me, a queer woman who tries to be as inclusive as possible, has many blind spots from my various privileges, and a lot of micro aggressions to unlearn. So knowledge sharing, and amplifying marginalized voices, is so important.

If you are part of the LGBTQIA2+ community, we want you to know that you are valid, you are loved, and you are seen.
