Woke up to news that the Westminster Council were going to shut down operations at the loveactivists' food and clothes distribution centre.. and if they weren't gone by 6pm, all donated items would be seized by the council.
We spoke to the police when we got there..
Their reason for action was.. obstruction. "people deviating from their paths, as caught on cctv, is cause enough for obstruction"
(to make the streets look nice for the tourists for the upcoming new years fireworks)
Fair enough.. I completely understand where they are coming from..
This is a prime example (and THe bit I find most abhorrent) of where governments priorities lie .. Always money before people.
But the irony is that they were in the streets because they were kicked out of the squat they had set up to provide hand outs, shelter, and company for the homeless (which is desperately needed especially over a cold christmas, where the streets are bare because we're all back with our families.. It's a majorly depressing time. Rafe's attempted suicide on Christmas is just proof of this)
Get this.. they were evicted despite a judge giving a heads up and saying it was alright for them to use the building to help the homeless.
Anyway, we all started linking arms around the kitchen and food supplies as it approached 6pm.
Coppers finally started their action plan round half 6.. (got a video ^ of it) But we managed to get all the food and clothes to Trafalgar Square before they could take any.
This is not even a class war..this is a human rights one.
Housing is a basic right.
You can't leave buildings empty whilst people sleep in the streets.
Futhermore, if you're trying to make your city look more appealing for tourism and economic drives as you are clearly trying to do. How is doing something like this helping?
YOu're kicking the homeless off the streets? Where are they to go?
Apparently the hand out centres were closed and are going to be closed over New Years too? So what the homeless have to go hungry til they open again in 2015?
