Last weekend I finally did something I’ve been meaning to do for a while... buy some of the BEST BEER IN THE WORLD*!

(*According to ratebeer.com, that is.)

On my way to a trail run I detoured a bit to the Brouwerij de Sint-Sixtus where I could stand in line to pay €23 per 6-pack for this legend. (I got the max - two!) The other option is to follow their process of calling the reservation line which is perpetually busy to reserve two cases for you to pick up on a specific date and time in the future. Despite my best efforts a few years ago, I was never able to make it to the point of actually speaking to someone. However, I understand that if you do, then you need to give your phone and license plate numbers, as you are only able to pick up two cases every two months.

Why the crazy price and high rating? Well, Westvleteren 12 is an objectively good beer, but what drives the demand is that the monks (yes, it’s one of the six Trappist beers in Belgium) only brew a limited quantity of it each year. That means you’ll find bottles for sale in a few select bars in Brussels for €9 each! 😳

That said, the rumor is that the St. Bernardus 12 which is widely available is exactly the same recipe just with a different water source. But okay, I’m sure whenever I drink these gems it’ll remind me of Belgium, the amazing beer culture, and fantastic memories I’ve had over the past 4.5 years. ☺️
