During our IG Live with @aprilharterlcsw she brought up what she believes is the key ingredient to whether or not a white person will actually engage in anti-racism work in a real way. Not just the surface, not just pointing to articles that talk about systemic racism across institutions but THE REAL WORK of actually digging into your own racist behavior, ideologies and microaggressions. . . Close, intimate relationships with BIPOC. That is what she believes is the key factor. Of course this is not the only factor and there are many who have BIPOC partners, children or friends who refuse to acknowledge their racism or be held accountable for the way their whiteness has harmed the BIPOC in their lives. . . If you really love someone how could you dismiss their lived experiences? If you claim to truly care about someone your feelings and comfort should be need to take a back seat in conversations around racism and white supremacy.
