To Love someone is to sacrifice of yourself for them. It's doing things that you may not have any interest in except that they are interested in it; while you may not enjoy any second of whatever "it" happens to be, your favorite part of "it" is seeing how happy the other person is. To Love is to set aside your ego. To Love is to yearn to learn someone, not to manipulate them, but to know how to bring the most joy to their life. Love is forgiveness and selflessness. Every night before you close your eyes, you’ll turn and watch your baby girl sleep. You’ll look at her little body and hold your breath so you can hear hers fall perfectly in tune with her little chest. “She’s perfect,” you’ll say.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe she *actually* used to fit in your arms like a chipotle burrito and how you’d have do laps around the room every night with her in your arms so she’d fall asleep. Most nights you’d count paces - most nights you’d lose count. Thing is… you didn’t mind one bit. In fact, you loved it and you dread the day when you can’t hold her in your arms. Despite the fact that your arms were about to fall off and that you haven’t had a good night’s sleep in months, you never wanted it to end.

Thing is… she’s so big now and she doesn’t fit the way she used to. You wish she’d stay small forever but you find yourself putting her infant onesies in storage and looking at her old pictures thinking to yourself “she’s less chubby now!”

And you hate to admit it, but you know it’s inevitable. Someday, your little sweetie is going be BIG. Like, woman big. It freaks you out a little bit because you know what dem boys be all about and you’ll have none of it. We take that thought, write it down on a twenty dollar bill, and place it neatly under the mattress with the rest of her jiujitsu savings.

So until then, you just want to hold her. You savor how it takes all her impossibly small fingers to wrap around one of yours as you pat her back gently and tell her you love her - even if she can’t understand. As you tell yourself these things, you can’t help but chuckle a little bit realizing you’ve become *that* dad.

A small price to pay.
