For over a year now Natalie has been working with the Russell Agriculture Society, the Township of Russell, and Eastern Ontario Health Unit (only to name a few) to turn her vision of a community based market into a reality. Although Natalie does not like to be the face of The Russell Community Market, it is very clear by her presence at our events, or correspondence with our vendors, that she has a pivotal role in our organization – her relentless efforts created this remarkable event, seamlessly imbedded into our lives, for our community to enjoy. Posted @withregram • @loverussellon Well friends, it’s happening! The cooler weather, the changing of the leaves to oranges, yellows, reds, browns. Yes, autumn is just around the corner! Does anyone remember ‘Autumn in the Country’? I do! It was a fall weekend when all of our local artists opened the doors to their studios and welcomed the community in to see their work and chat about their process. People would buy a ticket, get a map and start driving from one place to another. Painters, potters, woodworkers, photographers, all on one tour. It truly was magical! So here’s a thought: through the month of October we’d like to feature as many Russell artists as possible, but this is where we need your help! Please reach out and send a message or comment with your favourite local artist so that we can get in touch with them! The only stipulations that they live in Russell! If we are overwhelmed with too many artists, we will continue this feature as long as it takes! So people, send us your nominations for great artists is our town! Posted @withregram • @loverussellon Meet Kareen. “I grew up in a small village of about 100 people in the beautiful Ottawa Valley, so I am truly a small town girl. I tried living in the city for a couple of years but quickly realized that it wasn't for me. My husband and I moved to Russell in 1995 and it is one of the best decisions we have made. Raising our two daughters, now ages 19 & 21, in a small town environment was very important to both of us. I worked in an office setting in Ottawa for 20+ years and realized one day that I was bored and tired of doing the same thing day after day. So, after a front porch conversation, I joined local company Beyond the House in 2013 and haven't looked back! It has been a whirlwind few years and I am extremely proud to have been a part of building this business to what it is today! As my children can attest to, I enjoy gardening and have created a welcoming environment for my feathered friends. Photography is another of my passions and I get excited to find that perfect shot! I love to spend time with our family and with the wonderful friends we have made here in Russell. Wandering around other small towns and finding quaint little coffee shops and boutiques is my idea of an ideal day. Small town living is definitely for me. Russell is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. There is a true sense of community here and people pull together in difficult times and to help those in need. My husband travelled a great deal when our children were younger and I often relied on our friends and neighbours to help out with rides to and from the girls' activities, helping me get out of the driveway after a big snow storm or driving me to the hospital after a gallbladder attack with a newborn and two year old in the house! For newcomers, I like to point out some of the great features here, including the bike/walking trails, the conservation area along the Castor River and the dry stone bridge in MacDougall Park which is a wonderful location for family photos! "I was born and raised in this beautiful little town we call Russell, and have chosen to do the same with our children knowing that the opportunities for friendship, support and success abound in our small, but big hearted community. I began my own business, Re-Think Vintage, several years ago flipping and up-cycling furniture, helping to keep a few pieces out of the dump and giving our community another alternative to buying furniture from big box stores. My business has grown leaps and bounds and the community has been extremely supportive so much so that I am now also selling a furniture paint line (made in Canada) Fusion Mineral Paint. I hope to have as many people addicted to making things beautiful as I do! To give back I have donated over $5000 worth of product and time to local charities, something very important to me and my family. Covid has thrown a few challenges our way but the business will survive because of the support of my community...who says word of mouth isn’t as powerful as social media?! From schools to churches to extra curricular activities, Russell provides plenty for its community. The people is what make this town amazing and I hope to see the amenities and small town services pick up the pace to keep up with an established caring community.
