your voice comes out steady, even if your heartbeat is anything but. it doesn’t escape you that you’re reading off your phone instead of having copied the excerpt down into a notebook. yuri probably would have liked that better, but it hadn’t occurred to you. you’re not a poetry buff by any means, but you’d been looking. in the school library, at a bookstore near your house. for things you could say to her, things you could show her. like if you give her enough fragments, she could piece together the totality of what you feel for her, like a stained-glass mosaic.

“i would like to be the air that inhabits you for a moment only,” you say, and try not to keep holding your breath because you’ll run out of air if you do. “i would like to be that unnoticed and that necessary.” it’s a poignant quote, and you look up at yuri almost shyly after you say it. “what do you think? i thought it suited you. your writing style is similar, and you wrote a poem about breathing last week.”

❝ this ? eh -- it's just my , ah , halloween costume ! y - yeah ! ❞ sayaka wasn't sure if she'd seen him mid-combat , but boy was she glad she noticed someone watching her before she transformed back right in front of him . ❝ just seeing how it holds up before the big day , y'know ... ? ❞ maybe it would've sounded more convincing if it wasn't followed immediately by nervous laughter.

No, yeah, the laughing gives it right away, actually. Granted, though, seeing someone with strange powers wasn’t exactly a new phenomena for him. Adam had seen lots of weird things in his travels, and hell, even he himself was pretty strange and borderline inhuman when it came down to it, he couldn’t really judge. If anything, in recognizing her sketchy behavior, it only motivates him to act more oblivious. She clearly doesn’t want to talk about it, and he can relate to that struggle, so he’d play ignorant for her sake.

“Ohhh, okay. It looks really nice! I dunno if it’s pre-made or if you did it yourself, but it’s pretty spiffy. Definitely be careful not to get it dirty, though. The weather was a little crappy the other day...”

assistant kang lies on the hospital bed, her exhausted eyes trained on the ceiling. this place is so state-of-the-art that even the ceilings are scrubbed clean and pristine. how do the janitors reach up there? she’s so consumed by useless thoughts. in some way, it’s freeing. she’d had a dream, of v, of zen... her fingers twitch against the clean sheets.

she’s aware that someone else is next to her, but she doesn’t have the energy to move her head. the whole world feels slow, her muscles too lethargic and heavy to support the weight of the limbs. goodness, she’s exhausted. how long had it been since she’d gotten some rest? she closes her eyes, focuses on the sound of the voice beside her. it’s seven. she remembers how kind he’d been to her, needlessly kind, almost. is he upset now? he’s offering... suggestions, she thinks. jaehee murmurs, her voice slower and heavier than she remembers it sounding. “now i want to live like everybody else.” her breathing comes in slow, and she feels suddenly like she’ll fall asleep. “i want to have a life like everybody else.”
