" you can't understand . not unless you were there . " (eshe!)
Calcifer doesn't understand, Eshe's right about that. while he can appreciate a good story, there are some things better left unspoken and his own past is one of them - the history books had it right when they left out the real witches of Salem, Massachusetts. not all witches were so easy to catch, but Calcifer and his family were caught off guard - turned in by his own flesh and blood. he might not understand Eshe's situation perfectly, but he knows what it's like to be misunderstood. perhaps that's why he's giving Eshe the benefit of the doubt, thinking about what she says before he responds.
"no, i suppose i wouldn't," he says. "but maybe if you told me, i could relate a little more. we all have our scars. sometimes it feels better to share them. the hurt doesn't go away, but it makes it bleed a little less."
