I wrote this as a total joke and then recorded it as a joke... But it was just too cute not to release. It's so accurate for me.
I came from a small town in Newfoundland, and there are stereotypes surrounding rural life and Newfoundlanders in general. I've sometimes felt like people who came from money or grew up in cities didn't afford me the respect I deserved just because of my roots. I spent some time trying to prove that I was classy and educated, and could be a major city girl. But the truth is: I am classy, educated, and a major city girl, so why should I need to "prove" it? I will live in a city probably until I die. I love the diversity and the fact that it's more common/acceptable to believe in equality in larger urban centres.
But I'm also not hiding the Newfie slang or accent when the mood overtakes me. And I'm not hiding the fact that I'd really rather a bonfire in the woods or a house party to a club. And I'm certainly not hiding my belief that no one cooks with enough salt outside of Newfoundland.
Basically, I'm both. I'm a city girl and a country girl. This song just says that in a funnier way.
