Correct me if I'm wrong. A 4 year undergraduate education is comprised of 2 years lower div and 2 years upper div, traditionally of course. The purpose of your one year transfer is that you guys circumvent the first year of lower div education. Therefore, you will graduate in 3 years instead of 4. Yes?!?

I have taken SOCY 1, 10, and 15 but did not earn a GPA of 3.0 or better, what do I do?

First, do not retake the course if you earned at least a C or better. The University policy regarding repeating courses states that only courses in which a grade of D, F or No Pass may be repeated. Instead you will need to appeal to the Sociology department’s UEC (Undergraduate Education Committee) for approval to declare the major with a GPA below 3.0. In order to declare, on a Word document, write a letter addressed to the UEC explaining: (1) why you were not able to meet the 3.0 GPA requirement for declaration, if you received below a B in one particular class site the reasons why; (2) explain why you believe you will do better in future Sociology courses (What will be different the next time you take a Sociology course?); (3) explain why you want to be a Sociology major. At the bottom of the letter include your name, student ID number, list of the 3 lower division courses with the grade you received for each, and the cumulative GPA from those 3 courses. Email your letter and any other documentation you may have as an attachment to the Undergraduate Advisor, [email protected], or drop it off with the advisor in College 8 Rm 224. Can I Take Classes as Pass/No Pass?

The Sociology department does not have any restrictions on the number of courses a student can take Pass/No Pass in their major beyond the campus restrictions that no more than 25% of the UCSC credits applied towards graduation may be graded on a Pass/No Pass basis. However, students should take Socy 1, 10 and 15 for letter grades, in order to satisfy the GPA requirement for declaring. In cases where a student takes a lower-division course as Pass/No Pass then the "Pass" is treated as a C grade.  Students should check with their college to ensure that they have not gone over the University-allotted amount of courses that can be taken Pass/No Pass.
