1. Important Notes for Fall 2015 Enrollment

Do not contact instructors prior to the first day of class for enrollment issues, to ask for permission numbers, or to be added to a wait list. If a class is full and you meet the prerequisites/restrictions, add yourself to the wait list when your wait list enrollment appointment becomes available. Then crash the course on the first day of instruction. See wait list information below. If you have questions, contact the undergraduate advisor.

Your enrollment appointment for Fall enrollment has been posted. To find your appointment please log into your MyUCSC account and navigate to "my student center". On this page you'll see an "enrollment date" box on the right side of the screen. The information in the box tells you the date you can enroll, and you'll need to click on the "details" link to see what enrollment times you've received. Please note that unless you're a senior you will have three enrollment dates/times listed. The first is for first-pass enrollment in which you can enroll in up to 14 units, the second is for your second-pass enrollment appointment in which you can enroll in up to 19 units, and the third is your wait list enrollment appointment. Do not miss your enrollment appointments!

TBA Sections - The Office of the Registrar is currently working on scheduling section and lab day/times. If sections still list as TBA during your enrollment appointment, please initially choose a section, then Edit your section once they are available. 

New Student Enrollment - New Frosh and Transfer students will be enrolling July 20th-August 3rd. All Sociology courses will have seats reserved for the new incoming class. New Frosh will enroll in to SOCY 1 and/or SOCY 15, and new Transfer students will complete a Transfer Preparation Form in June/July to select their courses.

SOCY 1 and SOCY 15 - Will open the majority of its seats at 9am on the sophomore enrollment day (May 21st). If you are a junior or senior sociology student and need to take SOCY 1 and/or SOCY 15, please contact the undergraduate advisor.

SOCY 105A for Graduating Seniors: If you are a graduating senior who needs to take SOCY 105A but you were not able to enroll during your enrollment appointment, please contact me for help ASAP, do not contact the professor. Please contact me ASAP if you find yourself in this situation: undergraduate advisor

SOCY 126 - Is currently closed due to a pending day/time change. It will open once the day/time change has been completed.

SOCY 129 - Does not have an instructor and the class is currently closed. The course is subject to change or cancellation.

2. Enrollment Assistance & Options

If you were not able to get into any Sociology courses or a specific course, please review the following options:

Know your wait list appointment time and how to use wait lists. If you are eligible for a course but it has filled, your best option is to wait list the course once your wait list enrollment appointment opens (August 10th, check your time).

Review the previously approved elective course substitutions, and review the schedule of classes to identify courses you can potentially petition for approval.

Crash courses on the first day of instruction.

Have an internship or volunteer opportunity (or if you plan to obtain one) that is related to Sociology? Consider getting individual study units. Or search for internships through the Career Center.

Are you considering a double major or minor? Explore those interests now by taking one of their requirements.

SOCY 103A, SOCY 103B, SOCY 105A, SOCY 105B, SOCY 114, and a variety of other electives will all be offered this Summer Session. Enrollment opened May 1st.

Consider learning a new language. Not only are you fulfilling units, but you're learning a skill that's very valuable for Sociology majors and in the job market.

Remember that you must meet 180 quarter units by the time you graduate. Sociology will not give you all the units you need to graduate. At some points throughout your time here you must take courses that are used just to satisfy units.

Enroll into back up courses now, then wait list and crash courses later. The later you enroll into courses, the less courses will be available campus wide.

  3. Wait Lists

If you have any questions about wait lists, please contact the undergraduate advisor, do not contact the instructor.

Every undergraduate course will have a wait list available, except:

Courses with separate credit-bearing labs - some exceptions. Sociology does not have any separate credit bearing lab courses.

Independent studies

Courses that are enrollment by interview only.

BEST PRACTICES

Check your wait list enrollment appointment. Wait lists will become available on August 10th based on class level: seniors at 9am, juniors at 11am, sophomores at 1pm, and frosh at 3pm. The sooner you wait list for a course, the higher your wait list position number, and the higher your chances are at being auto-enrolled into the course.

The last day to add yourself to a wait list is October 2nd by 11:59pm. Wait list enrollment is available before the 8th day of instruction, when permission codes become mandatory for all enrollments. Please note, if you enroll onto a wait list after the first day of instruction, and you did not attend the first day of instruction, it is up to the instructor if they will consider you for a seat in the course.

All wait lists are set to "auto-enroll". Auto-enroll means that as a seat becomes available, the next eligible student on the wait list will be automatically enrolled. Reg FAQ.:"When signing up for the wait list it is important to make sure you do not have any time conflicts and you have indicated the swap you would like to take place if enrolled from the wait list. If there is one of these errors, the process will fail to enroll you, and move on to the next person on the wait list. The wait-list position number may not be the order in which students enroll."

For the Sociology department, auto-enrollment will stop the morning of the first day of instruction (September 24th). From that point on it is up to the instructor who gets into the course with a permission code. Instructors may not follow the wait list position numbers.

If you are not auto-enrolled by the first day of instruction, attend the first day to determine if you will be able to enroll. Attendance in the first class meeting is mandatory. Students who do not attend the first class meeting, the instructor may drop from the course/wait list.

HOW TO AVOID COMMON WAIT LIST MISTAKES

If you are skipped on the wait list please refer to the email you will receive at the end of the day from the registrar with directions on how to resolve the issue.

The course you wish to wait list for will put you over the 19 unit limit:

Students can not enroll in more than 19 units until the first day of instruction. You will not be auto-enrolled into the course if you are attempting to enroll in more than 19 units.

Best Practice: Swap yourself on to a wait list. Using the "swap" tab in your MyUCSC enrollment page will allow you to choose the course you want to drop from your schedule if you are auto-enrolled into the wait listed course.

If you have a time conflict:

If the course you wish to wait list has a time conflict with a course you are already enrolled in, you will be skipped on the wait list.

Best Practice:  Swap yourself on to a wait list. "Swap" to indicate the course you want to drop that has a time conflict. Or adjust your schedule prior to your wait list enrollment appointment time to prevent time conflicts.

Choosing section:

For courses that have a lecture and section, when you initially add/swap yourself on to a wait list you will need to choose one section to wait list under.

Best Practice: Choose a section that fits with your schedule, still has seats available, has the lowest number of students wait listed, and/or sections that are listed at the bottom or are unpopular sections (usually Friday or night sections). It is difficult to predict which section might have a seat become available, so if you have followed the best practices as much as possible, it is ok if you remain in the section you chose.

  4. Elective Course Substitutions

Course substitutions are courses offered through other departments, are upper-division, 5-units, contain sociological content and can be used to satisfy one of the electives for the Sociology major or minor.

Course substitutions do not apply to the Combined Soc/LALS BA nor the GISES major or minor.

Please refer to the Course Substitution page for additional information on: what is considered a course substitution, a list of previously approved course substitutions at UCSC, a list of previously approved course substitutions from abroad, the majors/minors who are allowed to apply course substitutions to their program, and the number of course substitutions you are limited to.

If you take any of the previously approved Course Substitutions, you must submit a Course Substitution Petition. The online version of the form is preferred for previously approved Course Substitutions. http://sociology.ucsc.edu/undergraduate/forms.html

To have a course added to this list or if you take a course from the Possible Course Substitutions list, you must submit a Course Substitution Petition with the course syllabus to the Undergraduate Advisor. The course must be 5-units, upper-division, and contain Sociological content.

Your enrollment appointment for Spring enrollment has been posted. To find your appointment please log into your MyUCSC account and navigate to "my student center". On this page you'll see an "enrollment date" box on the right side of the screen. Juniors with Senior Class Level - During Spring quarter there are typically a high number of junior, or 3rd year, students who have reached senior standing, or 135 units. Your enrollment appointment is based on the number of units you will have completed by the end of Winter quarter. Therefore there will be a high number of junior/3rd year students enrolling on the senior enrollment day. Courses typically fill quicker on the senior enrollment day due to this reason.

SOCY 1, 103B, 105B, 132, 150, 177, and 179 - Once Enrolled Do Not Edit Into a Full Section: Once you are enrolled in one of these courses and associated discussion section/lab DO NOT attempt to edit your section to switch into an already full section/lab. Doing so will DROP you from the class and place you on the wait list instead. There is no guarantee that you will be able to re-enroll into the course.

SOCY 105B Spring quarter - For Spring quarter only, we are offering a small capacity of SOCY 105B Contemporary Social Theory, with Professor Joseph Klett. The course has 58 seats (classroom only holds 58) and section enrollment is mandatory.

SOCY 103B or 196A for Graduating Seniors: If you are a graduating senior who needs to take SOCY 103B or SOCY 196A but you were not able to enroll during your enrollment appointment, please contact me for help ASAP, do not contact the professor. Sociology Declaration of Major Workshops

Have you completed your Sociology lower-division course requirements and passed with the appropriate grades? Then you're ready to declare the major/minor! Please review the information below to determine whether you must attend a declaration workshop, and for the declaration workshop availabilities. Not sure if you've met the requirements? Fall transfer students must declare a major by the Winter quarter deadline, and students who began as Frosh must declare a major by the Spring quarter deadline in their Sophomore year.

Are declaration workshops mandatory for my program?:

Sociology BA - Declaration workshops are mandatory. See the workshop availabilities below. 

Sociology BA with GISES concentration aka Intensive Sociology - Declaration workshops are mandatory. See the workshop availabilities below. Students will first declare the standard Sociology BA if they have met the lower-division requirements.  Once SOCY 1, 15, and 30A, B and C are completed with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 higher, you may see me during drop-in advising hours to add the GISES concentration.

Combined Sociology/LALS BA - Students have the option of attending a workshop or starting the declaration process directly with the Undergraduate Advisor during drop-in advising hours. Combined major students must begin the declaration process in Sociology, and complete the process with the LALS department.

Sociology minor or GISES minor - See the Undergraduate Advisor during drop-in advising hours. If you are already declared in another program, visit the other department advisor to obtain a completed and signed Declaration of Major/Minor form and Academic Planning form. Bring the forms with you to drop-in advising hours.

Senior class level students are exempt from the workshop, and may declare directly with the Undergraduate Advisor during drop-in advising hours. However, you may choose to attend a declaration workshop if you wish. See the workshop availabilities below.

Declaration Workshop Sign-up:

Spaces are limited, you must sign-up for a workshop. Sign-up sheets will be posted outside the Undergraduate Advisor's office, between College 8 Rm 224-226, or you may email [email protected] with at least two of your workshop preferences. The sooner you start the declaration process, the better!

1. Important Notes for Winter 2015 Enrollment 

Do not contact instructors prior to the first day of class for enrollment issues, to ask for permission numbers, or to be added to a wait list. If a class is full and you meet the prerequisites/restrictions, add yourself to the wait list when your wait list enrollment appointment becomes available. Then crash the course on the first day of instruction. If you have questions, contact the undergraduate advisor

Your enrollment appointment for Winter enrollment has been posted. To find your appointment please log into your MyUCSC account and navigate to "my student center". On this page you'll see an "enrollment date" box on the right side of the screen. The information in the box tells you the date you can enroll, but you'll need to click on the "details" link to see what enrollment time you've received. Please note that unless you're a senior you will have three enrollment dates/time listed. The first is for first pass enrollment in which you can enroll in up to 14 units, the second is for your second pass enrollment appointment in which you can enroll in up to 19 units, and the third is your wait list enrollment appointment. Do not miss your enrollment appointments!

Transfer Students: Transfer students who began Fall quarter, please be aware that the Transfer Preparation Process and issuing of permission codes is for Fall quarter only. I will not be issuing you any permission codes. You must enroll into your courses on your own during your enrollment appointment.

Discussion Sections: The Registrar is currently working on section assignments for larger lectures. If you are enrolling in a course that requires a section, but the sections all say "TBA", please choose a random section initially then once the sections have been assigned you can edit your section choices. The "edit" tab of your MyUCSC student enrollment page allows for switching of sections.

SOCY 10, 103A, 105B, 127, 136 - Once Enrolled Do Not Edit Into a Full Section: Once you are enrolled in one of these courses and associated discussion section/lab DO NOT attempt to edit your section to switch into an already full section/lab. Doing so will DROP you from the class and place you on the wait list instead. There is no guarantee that you will be able to re-enroll into the course.

SOCY 10:  The majority of seats in SOCY 10 will open on the sophomore enrollment day, November 18th. If you are a junior or senior who still needs SOCY 10 in order to declare your major and haven't already spoken with me, please send the undergraduate advisor a short email stating that you need to take SOCY 10 for Winter quarter.

SOCY 130 Sociology of Food: Courses listed as "Staff" are subject to change or cancellation. SOCY 130 is currently not available.

SOCY 176A Work and Society: Surveying Low-Wage Workers in Santa Cruz County: This course will be enrollment by permission code only. Students must first complete this online questionnaire (You must be logged into your UCSC email to have access). Your responses will be sent to Professor Steve McKay who will determine your eligibility and contact you with a permission code if you are eligible. Students may contact Professor Steve McKay directly as well at [email protected]. Students should also meet the course restriction: "Enrollment restricted to juniors and seniors. Enrollment restricted to sociology majors, proposed majors, and minors in sociology, global information and social enterprise, and Latin American studies/sociology combined majors."

SOCY 103A or 105B for Graduating Seniors: If you are a graduating senior who needs to take SOCY 103A or SOCY 105B but you were not able to enroll during your enrollment appointment, please contact me for help ASAP, do not contact the professor. Please contact me ASAP if you find yourself in this situation: undergraduate advisor

   2. Enrollment Assistance & Options

Know your wait list appointment time and how to use wait lists. If you are eligible for a course but it has filled, your best option is to wait list the course once your wait list enrollment appointment opens (December 1st, check your time).

Review the already approved elective course substitutions, and review the schedule of classes to identify courses you can potentially petition for approval.

Crash courses on the first day of instruction.

Have an internship or volunteer opportunity (or if you plan to obtain one) that is related to Sociology? Consider getting individual study units. Or search for internships through the Career Center.

Are you considering a double major or minor? Explore those interests now by taking one of their requirements.

SOCY 103A, SOCY 103B, SOCY 105A, SOCY 105B, SOCY 114, and a variety of other electives will all be offered this Summer Session.

Consider learning a new language. Not only are you fulfilling units, but you're learning a skill that's very valuable for Sociology majors and in the job market.

Remember that you must meet 180 quarter units by the time you graduate. Sociology will not give you all the units you need to graduate. At some points throughout your time here you must take courses that are used just to satisfy units.

Enroll into back up courses now, then wait list and crash courses later. The later you enroll into courses, the less courses will be available campus wide.

   3. Wait Lists

Every undergraduate course will have a wait list available, except:

Courses with separate credit-bearing labs - some exceptions. Sociology does not have any separate credit bearing lab courses. 

Independent studies

Courses that are enrollment by interview only.

BEST PRACTICES

Check your wait list enrollment appointment. Wait lists will become available on December 1 based on class level: seniors at 9am, juniors at 11am, sophomores at 1pm, and frosh at 3pm. The sooner you wait list for a course, the higher your wait list position number, and the higher your chances at being auto-enrolled into the course. 

The last day to add yourself to a wait list is January 14th by 11:59pm. Wait list enrollment is available until the 8th day of instruction, when permission codes become mandatory for all enrollments. Please note, if you enroll onto a wait list after the first day of instruction, and you did not attend the first day of instruction, it is up to the instructor if they will consider you for a seat in the course. 

All wait lists are set to "auto-enroll". Auto-enroll means that as a seat becomes available, the next eligible student on the wait list will be automatically enrolled. Reg FAQ.:"When signing up for the wait list it is important to make sure you do not have any time conflicts and you have indicated the swap you would like to take place if enrolled from the wait list. If there is one of these errors, the process will fail to enroll you, and move on to the next person on the wait list. The wait-list position number may not be the order in which students enroll."

For the Sociology department, auto-enrollment will stop the morning of the first day of instruction (Jan. 5th). From that point on it is up to the instructor who gets into the course with a permission code. Instructors may not follow the wait list position numbers.

If you are not auto-enrolled by the first day of instruction, attend the first day to determine if you will be able to enroll. Attendance in the first class meeting is mandatory. Students who do not attend the first class meeting, the instructor may drop from the course/wait list.

HOW TO AVOID COMMON WAIT LIST MISTAKES

If you are skipped on the wait list please refer to the email you will receive at the end of the day from the registrar with directions on how to resolve the issue. 

The course you wish to wait list for will put you over the 19 unit limit:

Students can not enroll in more than 19 units until the first day of instruction. You will not be auto-enrolled into the course if you are attempting to enroll in more than 19 units.

Best Practice: Swap yourself on to a wait list. Using the "swap" tab in your MyUCSC enrollment page will allow you to choose the course you want to drop from your schedule if you are auto-enrolled into the wait listed course. 

If you have a time conflict:

If the course you wish to wait list has a time conflict with a course you are already enrolled in, you will be skipped on the wait list.

Best Practice:  Swap yourself on to a wait list. "Swap" to indicate the course you want to drop that has a time conflict. Or adjust your schedule prior to your wait list enrollment appointment time to prevent time conflicts.

Choosing section:

For courses that have a lecture and section, when you initially add/swap yourself on to a wait list you will need to choose one section to wait list under.

Best Practice: Choose a section that fits with your schedule, still has seats available, has the lowest number of students wait listed, and/or sections that are listed at the bottom or are unpopular sections (usually Friday or night sections). It is difficult to predict which section might have a seat become available, so if you have followed the best practices as much as possible, it is ok if you remain in the section you chose.

   4. Course Substitutions

Course substitutions are courses offered through other departments, are upper-division, 5-units, contain sociological content and can be used to satisfy one of the electives for the Sociology major or minor. This course substitution information does not include the lower-division prerequisites nor upper-division core courses.

Please refer to the Course Substitution page for additional information on: what is considered a course substitution, a list of previously approved course substitutions at UCSC, a list of previously approved course substitutions from abroad, the majors/minors who are allowed to apply course substitutions to their program, and the number of course substitutions you are limited to.

If you take any of the previously approved Course Substitutions, you must submit a Course Substitution Petition. The online version of the form is preferred for previously approved Course Substitutions. http://sociology.ucsc.edu/undergraduate/forms.html

To have a course added to this list or if you take a course from the Possible Course Substitutions list, you must submit a Course Substitution Petition with the course syllabus to the Undergraduate Advisor. The course must be 5-units, upper-division, and contain Sociological content.

Fall 2014 Sociology Declaration Workshops

Have you completed your Sociology lower-division course requirements and passed with the appropriate grades? Then you're ready to declare the major/minor! Please review the information below to determine whether you must attend a declaration workshop, and for the declaration workshop availabilities. Not sure if you've met the requirements? Transfer students must declare a major by the Winter quarter deadline (but the sooner the better!), and students who began as Frosh must declare a major by the Spring quarter deadline in their Sophomore year.

Are declaration workshops mandatory for my program?:

Sociology BA - Declaration workshops are mandatory. See the workshop availabilities below. 

Sociology BA with GISES concentration aka Intensive Sociology - Declaration workshops are mandatory. See the workshop availabilities below. Students will first declare the standard Sociology BA if they have met the lower-division requirements.  Once SOCY 1, 15, and 30A, B and C are completed with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 higher, you may see me during drop-in advising hours to add the GISES concentration.

Combined Sociology/LALS BA - Students have the option of attending a workshop or starting the declaration process directly with the Undergraduate Advisor during drop-in advising hours. Combined major students must begin the declaration process in Sociology, and complete the process with the LALS department.

Sociology minor or GISES minors - See the Undergraduate Advisor during drop-in advising hours. If you are already declared in another program, visit the other department advisor to obtain a completed and signed Declaration of Major/Minor form and Academic Planning form. Bring the forms with you to drop-in advising hours.

Senior class level students are exempt from the workshop, and may declare directly with the Undergraduate Advisor during drop-in advising hours. However, you may choose to attend a declaration workshop if you wish. See the workshop availabilities below.

Declaration Workshop Sign-up:

Spaces are limited, you must sign-up for a workshop. Sign-up sheets will be posted outside the Undergraduate Advisor's office, between College 8 Rm 224-226, or you may email [email protected] with at least two of your workshop preferences. The sooner you start the declaration process, the better!

If you are enrolled in SOCY 1, SOCY 15, SOCY 105A, or SOCY 128I do NOT attempt to switch into a full section while wait lists are active. Indicating that you wish to switch to a full section will cause you to be DROPPED from the course and wait listed instead. Once you are dropped and wait listed, there is no gaurantee that you can be let back into the course.

SOCY 116 and SOCY 118 are cancelled for Fall quarter.

SOCY 1 & 15:  SOCY 1 and 15 will open on the sophomore enrollment day, May 22nd. If you are a junior or senior who still needs SOCY 1 and/or 15 in order to declare your major and haven't already spoken to me, please send the undergraduate advisor a short email stating that you need to take SOCY 1 and/or 15 for Fall quarter

If you take any of the Previously Approve Course Substitutions listed below, you must submit a Course Substitution Petition to the Sociology Undergraduate Advisor (College 8 RM 224). Petitions can be found by the glass display case at the beginning of the Sociology hall, 2nd floor of the College 8 Academic Building, and available as an online form on our website, under forms and handouts.

To have a course added to this list or if you take a course from the Possible Course Substitutions list, you must submit a Course Substitution Petition with the course syllabus to the Undergraduate Advisor. The course must be 5-units, upper-division, and contain Sociological content.

Please note: some of these courses have prerequisites. Check the schedule of classes to see if you meet the requirements to enroll. Otherwise, crash the course on the first day to see if seats remain. Be sure to choose other class options in case you do not receive a permission code.

1. Important Notes for Spring '14 Enrollment 

Do not contact instructors prior to the first day of class for enrollment issues, to ask for permission numbers, or to be added to a wait list. If a class is full and you meet the prerequisites, add yourself to the wait list when your wait list enrollment appointment begins. Then crash the course on the first day of instruction. Your enrollment appointment for Spring enrollment has been posted. To find your appointment please log into your MyUCSC account and navigate to "my student center." On this page you'll see an "enrollment date" box on the right side of the screen. The information in the box tells you the date you can enroll, but you'll need to click on the "details" link to see what enrollment time you've received. Please note that unless you're a senior you will have three enrollment dates/time listed. The first is for first pass enrollment in which you can enroll in up to 14 units, the second is for your second pass enrollment appointment in which you can enroll in up to 19 units, and the third is your wait list enrollment appointment. Do not miss your enrollment appointments!

SOCY 1:  SOCY 1 will open on the sophomore enrollment day, March 3rd. If you are a junior or senior who still needs SOCY 1 in order to declare your major and haven't already spoken to me, please send me a short email stating that you need to take SOCY 1 for Spring quarter. 

SOCY 103B & SOCY 196A for Seniors: If you are a senior who needs to take SOCY 103B or SOCY 196A but was not able to enroll, please contact me for help ASAP, do not contact the professor. If you wait to contact me even the following week I may not be able to help you. Please contact me ASAP if you find yourself in this situation: [email protected].

Sections: The Registrar is currently working on section assignments for larger lectures. If you are enrolling in a course that requires a section, but the sections all say "TBA", please choose a random section initially then once the sections have been assigned you can edit your section choices. The "edit" tab of your MyUCSC student enrollment page allows for switching of sections.

Winter Transfer Students: Enrollment for Spring will be different than Winter enrollment, in that I will not be issuing permission codes. You must enroll into your courses on your own. Is it very important that you do not miss your enrollment appointment(s).

The Wait List policy has changed! Please review the wait list information below.

2. WAIT LISTS

Beginning Spring 2014, every undergraduate will have a wait list available, except: courses with separate credit-bearing labs (does not apply to Sociology), independent studies, or courses that are enrollment by interview only. If you have any questions about wait lists, please contact the undergraduate advisor, [email protected], do not contact the instructor.

Please review the following procedures and best practices prior to enrolling onto a wait list. In addition, the registrar has many FAQs and guides for reference (with updates to come) including:

How to Swap Onto Wait List (If you are already enrolled in 15 or more units, use the "swap" to indicate the course you want to drop if you get into the wait listed course)

Information & Procedures:

Check your wait list enrollment appointment. Wait lists will become available after the 2nd pass enrollment appointments. When reviewing your enrollment appointments, take note of the last listed appointment. This is your wait list enrollment appointment. You will know it is your enrollment appointment because it will list "10.00" units under the "Max Wait List Units" column (indicates that you can only wait list for 10 units). You may begin to add yourself to wait lists beginning on your wait list enrollment appointment day and time.

The last day to add yourself to a wait list is April 8th by 11:59pm. Wait list enrollment is available until the 8th day of instruction, when permission codes become mandatory for all enrollments. Please note, if you enroll onto a wait list after the first day of instruction, and you did not attend the first day of instruction, it is up to the instructor if they will consider you for a seat in the course.

All wait lists are set to auto-enroll. Auto-enroll means that as a seat becomes available, the next eligible student on the wait list will be automatically enrolled.

For the Sociology department, auto-enrollment will stop the morning of the first day of instruction. From that point on it is up to the instructor who gets into the course with a permission code. Instructors may continue down the wait list or they can skip around the wait list and choose students based on their own criteria.

If you are not auto-enrolled by the first day of instruction, crash the course.

Attendance in the first class meeting is mandatory. For students who do not attend the first class meeting, whether enrolled or wait listed, the instructor may drop you from the course/wait list.

  Best Practices:

Be sure you understand how the wait lists work in order to avoid being skipped over on the wait list. If you were the next student on the wait list, but were skipped over, you will receive an email from the registrar at the end of the day about how to correct the issue.

The most common reasons that students are skipped over on the wait list (and how to avoid these issues) are:

The wait listed course will put you over the 19 units limit: Students can not enroll in more than 19 units until the first day of instruction. The system will continue to skip over you until you fix the issue. To avoid this unit issue, instead of adding yourself to the wait list, swap yourself onto a wait list. Using the "swap" tab in your MyUCSC enrollment page will allow you to choose the course you want to drop if you are enrolled into the wait listed course. You will only be dropped from the course you indicated IF you are the next eligible student to be auto-enrolled into the course. If you are skipped over because of this issue, please refer to the email you will receive at the end of the day from the registrar for directions on how to resolve the issue.

Time conflict: If your wait listed course has a time conflict with a course you are already enrolled in, you will be skipped over on the wait list until you fix the issue. To avoid this issue, be sure you are choosing courses that do not have time conflicts, or use "swap" when you are enrolling on to the wait list to indicate that you want to drop the course that has a time conflict. If you are skipped over because of this issue, please refer to the email you will receive at the end of the day from the registrar for directions on how to resolve the issue.

Chose a section that does not have available seats: For courses that have a lecture and section, when you initially add/swap yourself on to a wait list you will need to choose one section to wait list for. It is always best to choose a section that fits with your schedule, still has seats available, that have the lowest number of students wait listed, and/or sections that are listed at the bottom or are unpopular sections (usually Friday sections). If you are skipped over because of this issue, please refer to the email you will receive at the end of the day from the registrar for directions on how to resolve the issue. It's difficult to predict which section might have a seat become available, so if you have followed the best practices as much as possible, it is ok if you remain in the section you chose.

Wait list for courses as soon as your wait list enrollment appointment begins. Appointments are based on class level: seniors at 9am, juniors at 11am, sophomores at 1pm, and frosh at 3pm. The sooner you wait list for a course, the higher your wait list position number, and the higher your chances are at being auto-enrolled into the course.

Attend the first day of instruction. Whether you are wait listed or enrolled in the course, you must attend the first day of instruction. Students who do not attend the first day of instruction may be dropped from the course or wait list.

If you receive a permission code to enroll, and the course has a mandatory section, you may only enroll into an open section. If the section you chose for the wait list has filled, go back and choose an open section.

3. COURSE SUBSTITUTIONS 

Course substitutions are courses offered through other departments, are upper-division, 5-units, contain sociological content and can be used to satisfy one of the electives for the Sociology major or minor. This course substitution information does not include the lower-division prerequisites nor upper-division core courses.

Please refer to the Course Substitution page for additional information on: what is considered a course substitution, a list of previously approved course substitutions at UCSC, a list of previously approved course substitutions from abroad, the majors/minors who are allowed to apply course substitutions to their program, and the number of course substitutions you are limited to.

Course substitutions at UCSC do not apply to the Combined LALS/SOCY students, nor to the Sociology w/ GISES concentration students.

If you take any of the Previously Approve Course Substitutions listed below, you must submit a Course Substitution Petition to the Sociology Undergraduate Advisor. Petitions can be found by the glass display case at the beginning of the Sociology hall, 2nd floor of the College 8 Academic Building, and available as an online form on our website, under forms and handouts.

To have a course added to this list or if you take a course from the Possible Course Substitutions list, you must submit a Course Substitution Petition with the course syllabus to the Undergraduate Advisor. The course must be 5-units, upper-division, and contain Sociological content.

Gabriel Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship

The Gabriel Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to support undergraduate students in the Division of Social Sciences who are passionate about social issues and committed to public service. Gabriel “Gabe” Zimmerman graduated from UC Santa Cruz as a Sociology major, and he was working for Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords as her Director of Community Outreach when he was tragically shot and killed. Generous donations from more than 520 alumni, community members, and the general public funded this endowment. This endowment awards $2,500 annually to one outstanding undergraduate student who is a major in any of the departments within the Division of Social Sciences.

To Apply:

Undergraduate majors in the social sciences are invited to apply for this scholarship by submitting a short essay (2-3 pages maximum) about her or his passion for social issues and commitment to public service. Candidates must be in good academic standing and submit an unofficial copy of their transcripts.

Deadlines:

January 17th: Essay and unofficial transcript(s) due to the department

February 7th: Nominee is chosen by department

February: Winner announced

April: Award presentation

Course substitutions are courses offered through other departments, are upper-division, 5-units, contain sociological content, and can be used to satisfy one of the electives for the Sociology major or minor. This course substitution information does not include the lower-division prerequisites nor upper-division core courses.

Sociology major students following the 2012-13 catalog are allowed to substitute 2 courses out of the 6 upper division electives required (3 when you complete an EAP program). Sociology major students following the 2013-14 catalog are allowed to substitute 2 courses out of the 5 upper division electives required. Sociology minor students are allowed 1 course substitution. This list of course substitutions does not apply to Combined LALS/SOCY students or Intensive Sociology major students. Combined LALS/SOCY students may substitute up to 3 courses from an education abroad program, and Intensive Sociology major students must "justify" their upper-division 5-unit courses.

  3. Wait Lists Students will be able to place themselves on the wait list for select classes in MyUCSC beginning at 9am on December 2nd. Only a few of our courses have elected to have an online wait list. For all others please attend the first day of class and follow any instructions provided. Before you add yourself to wait lists please read the wait list FAQs as there are important notes on unit limits. Failure to read and follow the FAQs prior to adding yourself to a wait list could result in being skipped over for a spot in the class: http://registrar.ucsc.edu/faqs/students/wait-list/index.html All wait lists close once instruction begins, so be sure to attend the first day of class if you are still interested in enrolling into the course. Auto-enrollment means that as courses become available (i.e. another student drops the course, etc) then the next person on the wait list will be automatically enrolled into the open spot in the class. Please note, if you did not read the FAQs and used the enroll feature when you should have used the  "swap" feature because of unit limits, then you will be skipped over even if you are in position #1. If you are not auto-enrolled by the first day of class, you may choose to attend the first day of class but it is unlikely you will be admitted if the class has reached its maximum enrollment.  You should be prepared to enroll in an alternative course selection. You must attend the first day of class even if you are on the wait list, otherwise you will not be considered for an open spot.

The instructor will prioritize the AIS wait list based on their criteria and will issue permission codes for available space on the first day of class to students who meet the criteria.  You still must attend the first day of class to find out if you will be one of the students selected to receive a permission code to add the class.

Students are eligible to sign up for a workshop once they have completed the lower division requirements of the major with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.  To sign up for a workshop, visit the Sociology Department Office located in College 8, room 224. Your enrollment appointment for Fall enrollment has been posted. To find your appointment please log into your MyUCSC account and navigate to "my student center". On this page you'll see an "enrollment date" box on the right side of the screen. The information in the box tells you the date you can enroll, but you'll need to click on the "details" link to see what enrollment time you've received. Please note that unless you're a senior you will have three enrollment dates/time listed. The first is for first pass enrollment in which you can enroll in up to 14 units, the second is for your second pass enrollment appointment in which you can enroll in up to 19 units, and the third is when wait lists open (if a course has a wait list). Do not miss your enrollment appointment!

SOCY 1 and SOCY 15:  SOCY 1 and SOCY 10 will open on the sophomore enrollment day, May 16th.    Course substitutions are upper-division, 5-unit courses from other departments which contain sociological content and can be used to satisfy one of the electives for Sociology. Substitutions do not include the lower-division prerequisites nor upper-division core courses.

Please note: some of these courses have pre-requisites. Check the schedule of classes to see if you meet the requirements to enroll. Otherwise, crash the course on the first day to see if seats remain. Be sure to choose other class options in case you do not receive a permission code. Sociology major students following the 2012-13 catalog are allowed to substitute 2 courses out of the 6 upper division electives required (3 when you complete an EAP program). Sociology major students following the 2013-14 catalog are allowed to substitute 2 courses out of the 5 upper division electives required. Sociology minor students are allowed 1 course substitution. This list of course substitutions does not apply to Combined LALS/SOCY students or Intensive Sociology major students. Combined LALS/SOCY students may substitute up to 3 courses from an education abroad program, and Intensive Sociology major students must "justify" their upper division 5 unit courses.

2013-14 General Catalog Changes for Sociology

Please be aware of the following catalog changes for the 2013-14 academic year as you are planning out your courses for Fall quarter. New major worksheets for the 2013-14 catalog changes are available on our website: http://sociology.ucsc.edu/undergraduate/majors-minors/index.html The Sociology Department has made changes to the Sociology BA, Intensive Sociology BA in Global Information and Social Enterprise Studies, and the Sociology minor. There are no changes to the Combined LALS/SOCY BA or the GISES minor. These changes will take effect with the 2013-14 catalog, and you may choose which catalog year requirements to follow. Students declared in the Sociology BA, Intensive Sociology BA or Sociology minor, who are interested in updating their catalog rights to the 2013-14 catalog may do so by emailing me, [email protected], beginning Fall quarter. Sociology majors are allowed to substitute 2 courses out of the 6 upper division electives required (3 when you complete an EAP program). Sociology minor students are allowed 1 course substitution. WAIT LISTS Students will be able to place themselves on the wait list for select classes in MyUCSC beginning at 9:00 a.m., December 10. Only a few of our courses have elected to have an online wait list. For all others please attend the first day of class and follow any instructions provided. Before you add yourself to wait lists please read the wait list FAQs as there are important notes on unit limits. SOCY 134 Auto-enrollment means that as courses become available (i.e. another student drops the course, etc) then the next person on the wait list will be automatically enrolled into the open spot in the class. If you are not auto-enrolled by the first day of class, you may choose to attend the first day of class but it is unlikely you will be admitted if the class has reached its maximum enrollment.  You should be prepared to enroll in an alternative course selection. You must attend the first day of class even if you are on the wait list, otherwise you will not be considered for an open spot.

Courses set to manual enrollment (or interest wait list):

SOCY 30B SOCY 105B Manual Enrollment or Interest Wait Lists means that the instructor will prioritize the wait list based on their criteria and will issue permission codes for any available spaces on the first day of class to students who meet the criteria.  You still must attend the first day of class to find out if you will be one of the students selected to receive a permission code to add the class. 


For all other courses that do not have a wait list in MyUCSC, the department wait list policy applies:
 Sociology Department Wait List Policy- Students who hope to enroll must attend the first day of class. Available seats will be assigned on the first day of class based on criteria established by the instructor.  Please do not email instructors and ask to be on a waiting list.
