Here's the final of my Great Good Places of New Orleans posts from our recent visit. (Forgot to get a pic in front of Parasol's, dang it.) Molly's at the Market on Decatur Street in the south end of the French Quarter. Tourists love it, sure, but so do a lot of locals. Its pedigree is solid; legendary barman Jim Monaghan opened it In 1974. It's where newsmen (yes, mostly men) used to drink. REALLY drink like they did in the old days. Guys from the Times-Picayune and the Associated Press, knocking back gallons of beer and whiskey till 3 a.m. alongside politicians and other degenerates. The Monaghans still run it, too. Prices are low, the jukebox is loaded, and old Jim put an open window-perch in the front wall, so you can sit there with your frozen Irish coffee or $2 PBR, a burger and heaping basket of fried pickle chips from the Junction grill in back, and let the dubious splendor of lower Decatur roll on by in front of you for hours. I love it, and that's why I drew it.
