NOLA IN NYC DEPT: This place — the Erin Rose of New Orleans — has been getting a TON of love here in Brooklyn lately. Why? Their legendary frozen Irish coffee. Yep, we’ve seen a rise in the popularity of slushy drinks in NYC this summer. Something to do with the NOLA-style to-go bevvies we’re allowed since the pandemic hit, letting hot, thirsty New Yorkers toddle down the street with little plastic cups full o’ joy. Chief among these concoctions are replications of Erin Rose’s frozen Irish coffee, a blend of ice, java, whiskey and sweetness “that picks you up as it calms you down” (as touted by the Drink More Coffee ad campaign of the mid-1980s... as if we needed more stimulants in the ‘80s.) I’ve heard at least four Brooklyn bartenders invoke Erin Rose as their main inspiration on this front. Way to go Erin Rose! You deserve the love. ☘️ 🇮🇪♥️ Anyway, I can heartily endorse the frozen Irishes at the Commissioner in Park Slope and the Long Island Bar in Cobble Hill (as well as of course Erin Rose, AND Molly’s on Decatur and New Orleans’ Parasol’s in the Irish Channel.) Here's the final of my Great Good Places of New Orleans posts from our recent visit. (Forgot to get a pic in front of Parasol's, dang it.) Molly's at the Market on Decatur Street in the south end of the French Quarter. Tourists love it, sure, but so do a lot of locals. Its pedigree is solid; legendary barman Jim Monaghan opened it In 1974. It's where newsmen (yes, mostly men) used to drink. REALLY drink like they did in the old days. Guys from the Times-Picayune and the Associated Press, knocking back gallons of beer and whiskey till 3 a.m. alongside politicians and other degenerates. The Monaghans still run it, too. Prices are low, the jukebox is loaded, and old Jim put an open window-perch in the front wall, so you can sit there with your frozen Irish coffee or $2 PBR, a burger and heaping basket of fried pickle chips from the Junction grill in back, and let the dubious splendor of lower Decatur roll on by in front of you for hours. I love it, and that's why I drew it.
