American Airlines Announces Baggage Fee Hike and Changes to Mileage Booking
In a move that has taken many by surprise, American Airlines has announced a significant increase in its baggage fees, as well as a change in its policy regarding the booking of miles through travel agencies. Effective immediately, customers will now be required to pay $35 for the first checked bag if the service is booked online in advance, or $40 if purchased at the airport. This marks a $5 increase from the previous fee of $30. The fee for a second checked bag has also been raised to $45, up from $40. This is the first time since 2018 that American Airlines has increased its checked bag fee. The changes were announced as part of an effort to encourage passengers to become American Airlines AAdvantage members. Customers who sign up will continue to receive complimentary bags on American Airlines flights. In addition to the fee hike, American Airlines has also announced changes to its policy regarding the booking of miles through travel agencies567. Starting May 1, American Airlines will stop awarding AAdvantage points for bookings through many travel agencies. The exception will be agencies that qualify as “preferred” under a new policy. The airline has stated that it will provide a list of eligible preferred agencies on its website in late April. To be eligible, a travel agency must have a 2024 incentive agreement with the airline. Agencies that do have American incentive contracts must take additional steps to get on the preferred list. These changes are seen as the latest step towards pushing customers to book directly with American Airlines. The airline has stated that it will only grant AAdvantage miles and loyalty points to customers who book through an AA or partner site, a corporate account, or a “preferred agency” that books at least 30% of its trips through the American Airlines NDC. The changes have been met with mixed reactions, with some customers expressing frustration at the increased costs and restrictions. However, American Airlines maintains that these changes are necessary to ensure the best possible experience for its customers
