Ohio has 127 historic truss covered bridges. This bridge has a really interesting story... . The Rinard Covered Bridge was originally built in 1871, but was destroyed in a flood. After being rebuilt in 1876, three separate floods swept it away (1913, 1938, & 2004). Due to the strength of the bridge's architecture, the framework was sturdy enough for the bridge to remain intact and be put back. After remaining intact after being swept away in the 2004 flood, a second flood a few weeks later destroyed the bridge. Shieldstown Covered Bridge : 1876 "The bridge has sat exposed since last fall. While it makes for neat pictures, it is not good on the wood. It will sit through another winter exposed if it survives. If you look closely, you can see where the arch is split and broken as it comes down into one of the abutments. Obviously that is not good for the bridge wood to be exposed. With the harsh weather of the Indiana winter coming soon, it will sustain more damage. There had been talk about wrapping the bridge in plastic to try and help protect it in winter. Thankfully the state decided not to do that. This step would have been bad since the plastic would have contained the moisture and caused even more damage. So now it just sits there damaged and exposed. We will be lucky if they get her covered and restored.
