On the second day for Methods and Processes, we continued to work with cardboard. In groups, we were given different maps of different locations. Our given map was an aerial photo of an airplane graveyard. We were required to make a 3D model with the maximum size of 80cm x 80cm x 80cm out of a chosen area of the given photo/ location. We could make use of the properties and characteristics of the given landscape and design or create a model with a new theme.
My group thought of making the model with the theme of Amusement Park, Research/ Experimentation Lab, Deserted Prison....
After deciding on making the area into a prison-like landscape, I started prototyping cardboard planes, while the others made the architectural part of the model.
Through this process of creating a model out of a photo with cardboard boxes, I learnt how to make use of the existing materials and make the full of it. I also realised the importance of prototyping by making planes with different forms and ways in order to find the most suitable design. Most importantly, as this was a group project, sufficient communication and discussion between group mates and proper division of labour were indispensable. We had to learn each other’s weaknesses and strengths so that people could take up tasks that they were good at. This helped save time and the final outcome would look aesthetically better.
