“Hush, hush,baby girl.” Shane murmurs, cradling Judith in his arms as she coosand reaches forward for his face. He scrunches up his face asJudith's hand bats against his face and laughs as she tries to pushher hand into his mouth.

Shane carriesJudith down to the kitchen and rummages around until he finds a jarof pureed beets, making a face at the bottle. “Ugh, beets, soundsgross, huh?” He says, holding the jar between two fingers as hespeaks up a spoon and carries her over to the couch. He plops down onthe couch and settles her on his lap, opening up the jar and sniffingit.

“Ugh,” Heshakes his head at the scent, but stirs the beets anyway and lifts aspoonful to Judith's mouth. She refuses, turning her head from him.“I know I said it sounds gross, but come on, ya gotta eat it.”Judith refuses again and Shane cringes, lifting the spoon to hismouth.

Very reluctantly,he slips the spoon between his lips and tastes the beets – forcinghimself to make pleased noises. But Shane Walsh hatesbeets. On his list of vegetables he hates, they're at the top.“Delicious.” He cringes.

Judith gigglesand opens her mouth wide now that she's seen Shane eat the beets,earning a playful small glare from Shane. “Oh, I see how it is,”He says, getting a little bit more on the spoon and lifting it to herlips. She takes it without a complaint, but makes a face. “Yeah, Iknow, beets are disgusting. But if you don't eat, you'll be unhappyall day and all night and you'll keep Shane up allnight with your crying.” He says, speaking only between giving herbites of beets. Shane sets the jar and the spoon on the coffee tablein front of him, leaning back against the couch with Judith.

“Youknow, everyone tries to tell me you're the bad guy.” A voiceinterrupts his train of thought and he turns his head to see Carol,in a floral shirt and an ugly cardigan, standing a few feet behindthem. “But I think if they saw you with Judith, they'd definitelychange their mind on that.” She says as she comes around the couchand towards Shane and Judith, reaching down to take Judith fromShane.

“Yeah?Who says I'm a bad guy? Should I kick their ass?” Shane asks,looking up at Carol as she stands straight with Judith on her hip.She narrows her eyes down at Shane, who holds his hands up with acheeky grin on his face.

Thereason people think Shane's a bad guy is because he has to be, he'sone third of the Alexandria's constables. He's the one you don'twant hearing that you've beencausing trouble. “Well, you could just be alittle bit nicer.”She suggests stands to his feet.

“I'msuch a nice guy, come on.” Shane says with a grin, pressing hislips down on Judith's forehead. “Would this lil angel like me somuch if I was a bad guy?”

“Longas you have food.” Carol says, turning on around with Judith stillin her arms. Shane leans down and picks up the baby food from thecoffee table, heading towards the kitchen with Carol. He puts thebaby food way and the spoon in the sink, reaching towards one of thecoffee makers and pours Carol a mug of coffee.

Caroltakes the coffee from him with a smile, inhaling the scent of thecoffee. She really thought she'd never have real coffee again, notbad coffee made over a fire. She takes a drink and hands it back overto Shane.

“Ihate those stupid fuckin' cardigans.” Shane says as he watchesCarol adjust the cardigan. He watches her open her mouth to speak,but movement catches his eye and he looks up to see Rick coming intothe kitchen. “Mornin', Rick.”

“Morning,Shane.” Rick mumbles and comes into the kitchen, taking the mug ofcoffee from Shane's hands and taking a long drink from it. “Morning,Carol. Morning, sweetheart.” Rick leans down and kisses the top ofJudith's hair, taking his daughter from Carol. “Just give me somemorning time with her and you can have her back to take her todaycare, alright?” He murmurs to Carol. He doesn't want for her torespond before he, with the mug in one hand and Judith propped up onhis hip, turns around and starts walking out of the kitchen. Whenhe's out of view and earshot, Carol speaks.

“Thanksfor the save.” She says with a laugh, reaching her hand forward andwrapping her fingers around his tie. She tugs him towards her andleans up on her toes to briefly press her lips into Shane's. Quick,so they can pull away quickly if they need to. “You can take thecardigan off me later.”

Shanelets out a groan as she pulls away and drops his tie to fall backagainst his stomach. “And I'm the bad guy?”

Judith's been screaming for the past two hours and Beth's finallyhad enough, handing her off to Carol with tears in her eyes. Shefeels horrible she can't get Judith to stop crying, and she'sexhausted and just needs a few hours. She's thankful whenCarol offers to take the infant from her.

Carol's more than willing to take her, it brings her back to thedays Sophia was an infant. She had a pair of lungs on her, woke theneighbors up and kept them awake. Ed wouldn't even be home, he'dcrash on a friends couch when Sophia got like that.

The shrill crying is almost comforting to her.

Carol paces along in the showers where no one could hear them,Judith resting in her arms as she cries.

Judith isn't hungry, she doesn't need to be changed, she'sprobably tired from the crying – but mostly she probably wants hermother.

Carol understands, she'd give anything to have her mother backtoo.

She sits down on one of the benches and starts softly singing toher, a lullaby that she used to sing to Sophia. It worked like atrick with her – and it works like a trick with Judith. Well, aftershe's through the lullaby several times.

Or maybe Judith just gets tired of crying and finally fallsasleep. Whatever it is, Carol's happy about it – and she knowseveryone will be happy to not have her crying anymore.

“I didn't know you could do that.”

Carol looks up and her lips turn up in a bit of a smile, lookingup at Shane. “What?”

“I didn't know you could sing.” He says, taking a few stepstowards her. She scoots over a bit to make room for Shane on thebench. Shane sits down next to Carol and turns his body so he'sfacing her, looking down at Judith in her arms.

“Just a little bit, Ed never let me sing after we met.” Shanetenses a bit at the mention of her husband and stills seconds later,shaking his head.

“Asshole.” Shane mumbles. Carol glances over at him brieflywith a smile and nudges him, holding Judith out for him. He scoots abit closer and takes Judith from him, mumbling a small 'ah' has headjusted her in his arms. “Could hear her screams from the watchtower. What do ya think's gotten her all upset?”

Carol leans her head against Shane's shoulder and pushes somestrands of Judith's hair off her head. It's not much hair, but it'sthere. “I think she just wants her mom.” She says softly.

“I know the feeling.” Shane says softly, cradling Judith inone arm and wrapping the other around Carol's waist.

She sighs and purses her lips, nodding her head in agreement.“Yeah, me too.”

shane/carol/rick + college roommates au and/or sharol + sophia lives au

Shane/Carol/Rick College Roommates AU(ok established relationship is cool ok) (also modern lmao)

They move in together in Carol's senioryear and Rick and Shane's junior year frankly because they're tiredof the looks and the questions when people see the three of themcoming out of Carol's single room. It's a two bedroom apartment, butthey use the other bedroom strictly for homework and studying. Theirbedroom has nothing but their bed, their dressers, and a tv mountedon the wall (Shane insists, Shane installs)

Carol's going to medical school thenext year (she was going to a four year state college until she couldafford medical school) and is constantly watching medical shows. Fromthe drama shows to the reality ones, she doesn't care. She'sconstantly watching them. Neither Rick or Shane can handle them sothey hide out whenever she's watching them.

Both Shane and Rick are useless whenit comes to cooking, so it normally falls on Carol to make sure theyeat actual food. She spends Sundays cooking so that they're noteating take out during the week and it's easy to just reheat food onthe stove or the microwave. When I say useless, I truly mean thatthey are useless when it comes to cooking. I mean, they can't evenmake ramen. How do you fuck up ramen, you ask? Shane doesn't knoweither, all he knows is he did something wrong.

Shanewould not let anyone realize it, but he's a total nerd. He reallyenjoys studying (even if he doesn't like doing homework) and likeswriting papers. He actually makes money helping people write theirpapers (it used to be that he would write them for them but Carolputs a stop to that). If you can't find Shane in the living room withRick or Carol or in the gym, chances are you can find him in theiroffice studying.

CarolLOVES watching Rick and Shane together. They have such an ease aroundeach other that Carol is incredibly envious of. When they're sittingon the couch, at least one of them has the arm wrapped around theother or they're holding hands. She doesn't even think they realizethat they're doing it. Sometimes she has to actively push them apartso she can get in the middle of them and get her cuddles on. (Notthat they mind, when they realize what she wants)

Theysleep in specific positions, Shane on his stomach half on top ofCarol's back, Carol on her stomach, and Rick on his side. Shane'salways the first one awake, so there's that. He has a lot of troublesleeping if he's not on top of Carol, his head between her shoulderblades. It takes Carol a while to get used to it, but then she can'tsleep without it.

Shanesings a lot. Mostlyballads from 80's rock bands or country music, but he sings a lot. Inthe shower, when he's studying, when he's cleaning, when he's workingout even. Shane is always singing. He doesn't realize that Rick andCarol can hear him – but they do.

Shaneand Rick have very contrasting hands. Rick's are rough to the touchbut Shane's are insanely soft. She loves the contrasting feeling whenthey're touching her, it's almost as addicting as their kisses –which are also contrasting. Rick is soft, Shane is more passionatewhen he kisses.

Beforethey're a couple, they're all friends. They never go to bed angry,they don't hide anything from each other, they're not afraid to leteach other know when the others are acting like complete jackasses.They don't hold anything against each other when they're angry. Whenthe fight is over, the fight is over.

WhenCarol graduates from college, Shane and Rick are the only ones whoattend her graduation and they go out of their way to throw her asurprise graduation party just the three of them. Well, they try.It doesn't work out very well when Shane burns the food and they setoff the smoke detector.

Shane/Carol+ Sophia Lives AU

Sophiahas nightmare after nightmare about being out in the woods, and sheconstantly wakes up screaming on the road because of them. It'sfrustrating and, yes, annoying but she's a little girl so no one canreally get mad at her. Carol stays up throughout the night to makesure someone is there for Sophia when she wakes up. Shane alsohappens to be awake, most of the time it's because he's on watch. Hesits with Carol and tells her that he's never been happier than to bewrong than when they found Sophia.

It'simportant to Shane that, if anything ever happens to Sophia again,that she knows how to defend herself. With Carol's permission, Shaneteaches her how to use weapons, giving her one on one lessons. Heteaches her about knives and guns – he also teaches Carol duringthat time. Sophia takes to it immediately, but it takes Carol a fewtimes to learn it. Shane's patient with the both of them.

Ifthere's ever extra helpings, Carol always gives to Sophia and Carlfirst, but then she ends up giving some of the extras to Shane (whoscrapes it off onto her plate when she's not looking).

Sooften Carol and Shane sit together while Sophia sleeps that Sophiaand Carol set up their bed near where Shane's going to be, just sothey're closer to each other. During one of their talks, Carolquietly says thank you and Shane just stares at her. When he askswhat for, she tells him thank you for what you did to Ed. If ithadn't been for that, Ed would still be alive, Ed would still betormenting her and Sophia. Shane grunts and shakes his head, beforetelling her he would have knocked him out and left him for thewalkers or made him stay at the CDC.

Shanetakes Carol with him on a run (much like he did with Andrea) and theyunknowingly set off a trap of walkers left by someone. It's a smallgroup of them but it's still a bit overwhelming. Even though she'sable to handle herself, Carol ends up getting knocked over by twowalkers and almost gets bit. When Shane's finally able to get to herand kills both walkers on top of her, he checks every inch of her hecan get to make sure she hasn't been bitten or scratched when they'rein a safe spot he can do so. They almost have a first kiss but Carolturns away from him before their lips touch.

Theirfirst kiss isn't until a few nights later when Shane goes toapologize for the almost kiss. He's in the middle of his apology whenshe presses her lips against his.

Sophiasees them kiss around the third or fourth time they do it and shegets really shy around Shane because she doesn't know what this meansfor her and her mom. Is Shane suddenly her new dad? Is that howthings work now? She doesn't know, but when she sees how happy hermom is when she pulls away from Shane one of the times they kiss inprivate. She's never seen her mom that happy, not even when thingswere good between her parents.

sharol + H-How long have you been standing there?

Mostnights, Carol doesn't cry over Sophia. It's often because she's justtoo tired to do so and can only collapse on the cot and sleep.But there are some nights that she does cry, quiet enough that noteven Lori wouldn't her from the bunk below her when she was alive.Those are rare, they only happen once or twice a month. Even morerare are the nights where she can't stop crying no matter what shedoes and the nights that she can't keep it contained. In the sixmonths they've been living at the prison, it's only happened twice.The first time Carol she didn't look anyone in the eye the whole nextday.

Thenext, she sees it coming and hid herself away in the showers. As farshe knows, no one is scheduled for a shower that day and it's lateenough, the only ones awake are the people on watch; Maggie andDaryl. She's safe, sitting on one of the benches in the showers withher hands over her face, sobbing. Her back is shaking, a trash cansitting below her. She's heaving from the force of her sobs, butnothing is coming out.

Beingalive without Sophia doesn't hurt her this much normally. The firstfew weeks after she'd died - again, Carol had spent most of her timewondering why it had to be this way. She shouldn't have had to loseher daughter in the way that she had. Sophia should have buried her,not the other way around. Carol doesn't look at this as a punishmentfor wishing death on Ed, now. She knows that this is the way theworld is now. The death of her daughter taught her that, but thedeath of Lori made her realize that.

Herthoughts of Lori turn on her and the sobs get heavier, they getlouder.

Still,it's a shock when there's noise not far away.

Thesounds of someone backing out slowly break Carol out of her sobs andthey stop abruptly. She wipes off her face and nudges the trash canunder the bench, turning her head and scanning the dim room forwhoever it was.

Whenher eyes land on Shane Walsh, he stops moving, knowing he's caught.“I, uh, I'm so-” He starts to apologize for whatever, but Carolcuts him off.

“H-How,how –.” The tears are still gone, but her voice is stillunsteady. She could burst back into tears at any moment. “How longhave you been standing there?”

“Ain'tbeen long,” Shane's voice is soft, gentle. Shane's voice has levelsin it, different tones. “Jude threw up on me, didn't know anyonewas down here.” It's now she realizes that Shane's shirtless, at-shirt clutched in his hands. Her lips turn up in a bit of a smile.

ShaneWalsh can handle walker guts all over him, but he can't handleJudith's spit up.

Carolwaves her hand towards the shower and it takes a moment but Shanemoves through the showers and is on the opposite side of the wallbehind her, t-shirt and jeans tossed over the edge of it. She moves  to pick up the trash can under the bench and lifts it to the top ofthe barricade. “Fill it up, I'll clean up your shirt.”

“Carol,you don't have to do that.” He says.

“It'llgive me something to do.' She argues.

Shanetakes the can from Carol and moves back a bit from the stream ofwater, letting it fill up a bit before he hands it over to her.

Shefinds one of the scrub brushes from a sink nearby and sits on thebench, his t-shirt spread open in front of her. They don't talk asShane showers and Carol scrubs his shirt as much as she can. Hedoesn't ask why she's crying, he knows. They've hashed out Carol'stears and her nightmares before, back when the pain was still fresh.

Caroltenses for a moment when she feels two hands rest on her shouldersbut relaxes when she remembers the touch, the gentle fingertipspressing against the skin just under the straps of her tank top.There's a kiss on the back of her neck and she sighs.

Lipstouch her skin repeatedly until hot breath is on her skin and Shane'svoice is in her ears. “Come find me the next time this happens,alright? You aren't alone.” Carol drops the brush against his shirtand moves one hand up to run over one of the hands on her shoulder.One hand comes from her shoulder and moves around her front, fingersrunning along her jawline.

Shaneturns her head towards his and captures her lips in a brief kiss.“Stay with me tonight.” He mumbles before pressing his lipsagainst hers again. Not enough time for Carol to return the kiss.

“Everyonewill know in the morning.” He mulls it over, shrugging hisshoulders.

“Letthem.”

“Howmany lives are you down to?” Rick mumbles as he takes a step intothe hospital, looking at Carol as rests in the bed.

Carolturns her head to look at Rick, clearly in shock that he was there tosee her. She knew that Carl as still recovering just a few beds over.He hadn't woken up yet, so that was probably why he was stopping tosee her. “What?” Carol questions once the shock of Rick'spresence goes away.

“SomethingDaryl said when I was worrying about you last year,” Rick starts,pulling up one of the chairs to Carol's bed and sitting down in it.“He told me not to worry about you, said you were down threelives.” He hadn't really understood the saying much, but it hadbrought comfort to Daryl so it brought comfort to him as well.

Asmile forms on Carol's face and she laughs for just a second. Shestops after a moment, her face contorting in pain. “Sorry,” Ricksays as he brings both hands up and sets them on the bed. From wherehe's sitting, Rick can see Carl's bed and can see when he wakes up.When, when, when. It's a mantra that Rick has forced himself toadopt. It's the only thing that really gets him through the days.

Carollifts a hand and presses them over Rick's connected hands on the bed,stilling his moments. Rick didn't even realize his hands had beentrembling until Carol pressed her hands on top of his. “He's goingto be fine. After everything he's been through, nothing can get himdown.”

Rickopens his mouth to argue with Carol, that this is worse than anythinghe has everything to go through. How the hell can Carl get throughthis? But Rick can't bring the words to come out of his mouth, hiseyes just fall on Carl across the room. Rick knows this won't be thelast time he ever sees his sons life in danger, it isn't the firsteither, but he'd give anything to be trading spots with him.

“Howmany lives are you down to?” Rick asks again, his eyes not leavinghis sons bed. He need to not think about his son, he knows that. Evenif his eyes don't move from the bed, he needs to just not think.
