❝ A sailor all your life an’ still bumping you ‘ead on bulk’eads, ❞ she grumbled, huffing indignantly as she carefully wound the bandage around his head. ❝ Really, William, you need to be more careful. You ‘ave a family now to t’ink abou’. Your poems are lovely bu’ ‘dere ‘es a time an’ a place. Aboard a ship ‘es no place to get so lost in your own t’oughts. I shoul’ much rat’er ‘ave you return ‘ome alive an’ well ‘dan receive any verses or letters from you. ❞ Gentle scolding, yes, but scolding nonetheless.
She wasn’t trying to be cruel, it was merely her constant worry over him bleeding out from a vein that was usually closed. She knew well how dangerous a life at sea could be, the many perils that a sailor faced, and seeing him battered and bruised ignited those worries all the more, spurring her anxieties to their most heightened state. Pursing her lips, face taut with worry, she tied off the end of the bandage and tucked it neatly against his head before taking his hands in hers, squeezing gently.
❝ Promise me, William, ❞ she implored, her voice soft now, ❝ promise me you’ll be more careful. If one day you don’ come ‘ome... I don’ t’ink I coul’ bear ‘de pain. ❞
