Kit Breakdown: Warriors (Linked Universe)
(all art by @/linkeduniverse)
This is a very lengthy and pedantic reviewing of the armor and weapons for our favorite L(Tw)ink to have a captaincy and a fascination with 5-year plans! *deep gasping breath* People have said that this would be cool, so who am I to refuse? Plus, it might be good reference for any fic writers out there!
None of this is a dig at JoJo, we are behaving as if he made all these terrible decisions himself, got it?
We'll start with basic weaponry. I know, I know, typical, but important! Bear in mind that I've never played Hyrule Warriors, so things may be a bit skewed.
The sword. It appears to be the Knight's Sword, which I would classify as a longsword- specifically for the two-handed grip and length. It's short for its name, but that makes sense, as Wars uses it mostly as a one-handed weapon.
However, the way he uses it is Stoopid. if I may be so bold.
See this little exchange? It's Stoopid. Both of his hands are clearly on the hilt, for more grip, yeah? More power? But a sword, in this situation, is a lever, and both the fulcrum and the load are at Wars's hands. This means you need a fuck ton of force resisting the load to make it actually Go anywhere. And so you want to spread out your force, but he does Not.
But this can be explained away by saying he's not a power fighter, which he is not, and that he's used to crowd-control, which he is, so I'll give it a break.
Estimated Weight: 3.5 1b. / 1.6 kg. ATM (at the most)
Shield!
Again, from the Knight set. I'm choosing to believe it's not as thick as it looks, because from what I can see it's- what- two inches, three inches thick? Wars. Honey. You're strong, but you're not totes-around-~60-pounds-of-iron-on-your-arm strong. (yes I did math, it's halfassed math but it's valid for the constraints of the image)
So, hollow shield. Both an elbow and hand grip, good for solid blocking, which he doesn't do a lot of because he appears to drop and pick up his shield occasionally throughout this battle, but still. And the paint job's nice too. I'd still choose wood for this sort of thing.
Estimated Weight: ~20 lbs / 9 kg if you're being nice. ~60 lb. / 27.2 kg. if not.
So with that over with, our kit weight is up to 23.5 lb. / 10.7 kg.! On to the armor!
So. Starting from the inner layers out. He has:
Underlayer- I and others initially thought these were long johns, but we see differently in the below image. Sadly. These aren't very heavy weight at all, and afford almost no protection, except from chafing that the mail could bring on.
Estimated Weight: 1 lb. / .5 kg. Total Estimated Weight: 24.5 lb. / 11.2 kg.
Mail- A nice scaled lamellar from what I'm seeing. This sort of defense works by overlapping countless tiny scales of metal and riveting them onto a base- probably leather for durability, and Wars really likes leather so it makes sense for the design. However, the Chest Window(TM) is an issue. Man is begging for free shipping on his punctured lung. Plus, this appears to be the only rigid protection on his torso. Why is this bad? He's fighting intelligent enemies! That's literally stated in the comic! They can slip their shiny lil' swords into the articulations between the scales and puncture things!!
Now, he also appears to have two different sets of mail (different chest window in earlier comics). I'm just going to be lazy and take the same weights for both, because being lazy is my Favorite Thing, but there are two pictures for your consideration!
Estimated Weight: 20 lb. / 9.1 kg. Total Estimated Weight: 44.5 lb. / 20.3 kg.
Extra Protection- consists of boots, bracers, pauldron thing, and scarf.
I love the boots aesthetic-wise, even if they do waste leather and lack the 3-inch heels I'd expect from his time period and have curious blue patches on the backs. The iron toes are very nice even if they are an atrocious waste of metal. If I had to pick a descriptor, it would be 'mid'.
Estimated Weight: 6 lb. / 2.7 kg. Total Estimated Weight: 50.5 lb. / 23 kg.
The bracers are a bit out of place, mostly because you could've made a helmet with that metal- like seriously heads are important- but we'll forgive it because they clearly don't impede his movements like they would if they had any more length in any direction.
Estimated Weight: 4 lb. / 1.8 kg. (pair) Total Estimated Weight: 54.5 lb. / 24.8 kg.
Pauldron thing! Possibly my least favorite part of the kit! Because the single easiest strike to make, due to gravity and ease of motion, is a downward one. Downward strikes come down on your neck and shoulder. And the HUGE extension of that pauldron means that it funnels the strike onto one's neck. However, it gets points for being mounted correctly (on top of the shoulder) even if it seems to be suspended by leather straps. Also loving the articulating plate beneath it.
Estimated Weight: 4 lb. / 1.8 kg. Total Estimated Weight: 58.5 lb. / 26.6 kg.
The scarf. Now, there is a concern with this. Namely, it is a hazard if your enemy is intelligent enough (see Mail) to grab both ends and yank. HOWEVER! It works as a halfassed substitute for actual neck protection if he bunches it up enough, so that gets it out of the total-failure category! And if we ignore the wrapping and fervently imagine that it's pinned there, with no loops around the Very Important Head Stalk, the first issue goes away!
Estimated Weight: 5 lb. / 2.3 kg. Total Estimated Weight: 63.5 lb. / 28.9 kg.
Final Estimated Weight (Weapons): 23.5 lb. / 10.7 kg. Final Estimated Weight (Armor): 40 lb. / 18.2 kg.
Conclusion: He's built like a Twink but he doesn't carry things like one! Also, my initial estimate of around 50 pounds of kit was correct! Ha! He's also got the right sort of kit for his fighting style- compared to what Time has going on, his armor is light, and he's used to it- so he sacrifices total protection for mobility. Although he should still have a helmet. Sigh.
So, yeah! Bear in mind that you should fact-check what you've seen here, mostly for the math (because I hate math and did it mostly in my head so it's probably not the most accurate), but I have offered my extensive opinions as much as I feel like is needed!
Feel free to correct me if you have experience with weapons/armor or knowledge I don't have otherwise, however, please keep comments civil!
