🖤 Personality: I'm utter crap at these parts, but I'll do my best. Lua’s personality is a complex mix of slight mischief while holding a sensitive and emotional core. She's a rather goal-driven and morally conscious person. Due to her being not exactly human, she has a dissimilar way of viewing the world. She is empathetic and kind (to a fault). Lua is introverted, calm, but not antisocial---and isn't opposed to interaction.
🌛 Powers + Abilities: Her ability is that she is able to release gases or toxins that can make people feel calm or fall asleep (depending on the intent). That is pretty much it (from a surface level) and the sleep/calming agent is released through her hair. However, the drawback is that she has to be very careful with how much she releases, otherwise it can legitimately make people sleep permanently (aka, kill them, hence the play on her alias, Nightshade).
Also, another drawback is that this takes active energy out of her to make, release, and expel. She can’t instantly recreate it on a whim like an endless producer. This does however make her immune to sleeping medicines, sedatives, etc—and because of this, she often has trouble sleeping on her own accord. This drawback has given Lua insomnia.
🌕 Origin of Powers: I’m gonna try to explain this as best as I can but I’m still working out some details (which when fixed, will be mentioned here). I suck at these parts too, lol.
Lua was an intern working underneath Dr. Jonathan Crane, who was working on perfecting his fear toxin secretly at the time. Lua was a student from Gotham State University, wanting to graduate with a psychology degree. However, Crane was the only other available person she could be an intern for at the time because not many others were taking her. Crane was originally a psychiatrist for Arkham Asylum (as his canon lore usually states), and Lua was wanting a psychiatric position in the institution.
While Crane was working on his diabolical scheme behind closed doors, Lua was assigned to help him work on a sedative/sleeping agent for Arkham’s most violent and volatile criminals (such as Bane, Killer Croc, etc). He’d give lots of stuff for Lua to do, even throwing some of his own responsibilities onto her—which is how was able to prevent her from initially finding out. He overwhelmed her on purpose.
Despite being her superior, Lua never truly liked Crane and felt that his views on the world were too harsh, being disturbed by his obsession and fascination with fear. She understood it could’ve come from his own experiences and whatnot, but she still didn’t like it. However, Jeremiah Arkham made it explicitly clear that Lua was to work under Crane if she ever wanted a chance of obtaining a job with them in the future, so—against her better judgment—she did it (though reluctantly).
One day, Crane was even attempting to see if there was a way for him to be able to release the fear toxin he was secretly making at his own discretion within his own body. Basically, he wanted to be able to release this whenever he wanted so he wouldn’t constantly worry about depleting himself of resources to make it.
And this was bad because he needed to use the materials with Arkham Asylum to make his gas. So by having supplies lessening at rates they shouldn’t be, no doubt they’d catch on what Crane was planning. That’s why he wanted to see if making this ability was possible.
So what does he do? The only sane option. And by that, I mean he uses the sedative on Lua and experiments on her while she’s unconscious and keeps her in a chamber to test and see if his formula works of course!
And it does (unfortunately). This is the overall gist to how Lua got her powers because Crane used a version of the sedative they were both making instead of his fear gas because it was unfinished. After managing to escape the chamber, she burns the formula notes and pages Crane made so he couldn’t replicate it.
She already knew if he was willing to test it on HER, there’s no way he wasn’t planning something worse. Crane then tries to kill Lua upon her doing that, being an ironic twist of fate occurs with Lua using the powers he forcefully gave her to make him fall asleep so she could get away from him. When Crane wakes up, he is arrested because Lua gave the collection of his plans for the fear gas to Jeremiah, who then gave it to the police. Crane vows to kill Lua because she’s too much of a loose end.
📓 The rest of Lua’s Story: As of this point in time, Lua’s story mostly revolves around her going to war against Scarecrow for what he did to her and what he was going to do with other people. And as fate would have it, she eventually ends up becoming allied with Batman who was also warring against Scarecrow thanks to the rise of paranoia and fear-based murders running rampant in Gotham thanks to Crane. But for the most part? It’s her warring against Scarecrow.
➕ Extra: If you're someone who's come across this OC before, let me explain. I originally posted this OC on an alt account, but wanted to move it here to my main one rather than dispersing random photos around (and this is where I post my art anyway).
It's obvious by now I change a LOT of stuff---and that's because while I did like what I made previously, I felt the urge to change it into something else. Call it a creator's revelation if you will. I apologize if this is disappointing for some of you, but I believe this was the right thing to do.
