1. What’s your personal favourite thing you wrote this year?

been mulling over what i’ll pick for round two, and it’s gotta be the second half of chapter 9 of acb -- where kim calls jimmy from the bar, and he does the folding cigarette trick, and then the drunken makeout sesh and willa cather reading. 

i think i did pretty good with the tension/release and vibe of that whole thing, and i like remembering the way i felt writing it.

7. What’s your favourite piece of description or narration?

subbed in, ty!! 

this was really hard. but i really like this piece here from the christmas chapter of acb, i feel like it’s really informed by jimmy’s experiences and jimmy’s eyes in a way my description often isn’t, and i’m happy with the rhythm of it, how the sentences/paragraphs build.

And then Rebecca heads inside as well, kissing Chuck on the cheek and patting Jimmy on the shoulder—and it’s just him and his brother, surrounded by the flames.

The candles shift with the silence.

They look like the boats on the Lake Michigan at night, lights bobbing, moored along the shore.

They look like the tall buildings up State Street, up Michigan Avenue, with their thousands of square windows that would flick yellow as the city darkened, as the air chilled and the sidewalk iced over. And Jimmy had always felt amongst himself there, beneath those yellows lights, had always felt like a piece in some great machine, turning up and over and over and up.

And he stares at the luminarias now and they look like the lights of Albuquerque in the rearview mirror, driving up historic Route 66.
