Santeria: An introduction
The African diasporic traditions are geographically varied. In a general sense, the diaspora is defined as the practice of capturing and transporting African people across the Atlantic. The word comes from the melding of the Greek words dia (across) and speirein (to scatter). Also called the Middle Passage, enslaved people were taken to Europe, Cuba, the Americas, and the Caribbean. In order to keep their beliefs, they synchronized their deities with those of the Catholic saints.
