thoughts on superstitions? like fairy-rings, spilled salt, good luck charms and talismans, things like that

My thoughts are that every story, superstition, and tradition that humans undertake come from a time and place when humans understood their world in a way that made sense to them, they constructed an understanding that gave them answers to questions they had with few other tools to give them answers, and made them feel safe that they understood their world in that specific context and empowered them against forces that they could not understand, be it supernatural or otherwise.

I can’t claim to know everything that has ever happened in the history of ever, be it the short time of human history or the much longer history of our planet, or the universe itself. I know there are things out in the unknown that are much larger than myself, and larger than my ability to understand them, be it natural, preternatural, or supernatural. With my anthropology background, I’ve studied many cultures that hold deeply diverse superstitions that are all legitimate in their own way; I understand the time and context in which superstitions were created in order to explain or defend against phenomena (or otherwise encourage common sense, like not walking under a ladder or the bad luck you’ll have is a bad bonk on the head), and I also understand that my understanding is flawed because I am not of those cultures, I do not partake of those superstitions, and I do not live in the worlds in which others live in.

So, in the end, all superstitions are valid and legitimate. Each were designed with a purpose to explain phenomena, protect us from it, and give us comfort against it.
