Beech tree lattice of roots at Waggoners Wells on the Hampshire/Surrey border. These ponds or wells were supposedly created in the 17th century as “hammer ponds” for the iron industry but it is clear this valley has been in use as a natural resource much earlier than that judging by the network of deep and ancient paths dissecting the woodland. Apart from some obvious brick and concrete ducts it would seem more logical to suppose the natural sandy ironstone here has been exploited since the first Iron Age.
