LUCY
Actually, it turned out to be a bit deeper than expected. In a really good way.
Colombiana - Zoe Saldana / Luc Besson
I liked Colombiana a lot. I’ve been waiting for Besson to make another movie with an ass kicking female lead for a long time. Adèle Blanc-Sec was okay but she was no Nikita. For those who don’t know who Luc Besson is; he’s a French action film director, writer and producer. I am a HUGE fan. His movies are one of the reasons I overcame my fear of subtitles.
In addition to directing Nikita (the original movie), Leon / The Professional and the Fifth Element; Besson has written and produced some pretty awesome action movies such as:
Unleashed / Danny the Dog - with Jet Li
District 13 / Banlieue 13 - French parkour/free-running classic
Kiss of the Dragon - with Jet Li & Bridget Fonda
Taken - with Liam Neeson
Taxi 1, 2 & 3 - with Samy Naceri
The Transporter 1 & 2- with Jason Statham
,
Colombiana was a mix of everything Besson does best:
Ass kicking female becomes a professional killer
Awesome Parkour and action scenes
Slightly incompetent cops
corruption
Unexpected Humour - the cinema was in hysterics
Some elements seemed a bit like Besson was recycling characters and themes from his earlier movies but that could be because I’ve watched so many of his movies.
As a Londoner, it made my smile to watch UK veteran Lennie James and Callum Blue (Smallville’s Zod) playing Yanks.
Amandla Stenberg delivered a stellar performance as the younger version of Zoe Seldana’s character.
Zoe's was awesome in all her ass kicking glory playing the titular Colombiana. The film has a lot of humour and it’s well directed if a bit improbable at times. It’s good popcorn movie.
Oh and for men who don’t like watching women kick ass, there’s a lot of “watch Zoe be sexy scenes”.
Oh and Micheal Vartan is there as Colombiana's love interest so the men in that audience don't feel emasulated..JOKES.
It's a good movie.
