The Rapture Live Show Review: 7/27, House of Vans Chicago

Chicago hadn’t seen The Rapture since 2012, so I was surprised to first see Luke Jenner on stage drumming for one of the openers of their House of Vans show. Then again, they were always bound to get right into it, opening with the underappreciated title track from their third album, In The Grace Of Your Love. They wouldn’t play another hit until their behemoth, cowbell-laden “House of Jealous Lovers” eight songs later, but their consistency--in terms of song quality, tightness, god forbid plain fun--was pretty remarkable. The ending one-two punch of “Sail Away” and the freakout of an Echoes title track would have left me and most of the crowd pleased. But they came out for an encore, to play a song that’s arguably even better than “Jealous Lovers”. Their 2011 comeback single “How Deep Is Your Love?” is one of the best songs of the decade, its stabs of house piano setting up for a pained, wailing Jenner, the band carrying him along to a build-up that rivals Cut Copy at their peak. Talk about a reward for the crowd. I’m glad this band is back.

Signing your life and your artistic well-being away to someone who doesn't like music is not a good idea. I spent the next five years in meetings with people who didn't like music, trying to tell them about acid house. "And in college I liked Dave Matthews Band. I don't really buy music anymore but I had an internship at college radio and now I work here and I have your band in my hands." That's not a good feeling.
