Luke Jerram — Microcosmos
We've just come home from a night away in Sherborne, an old town in rural north Dorset. Sherborne Abbey (originally a Saxon Cathedral built in 705) is currently hosting an art installation called Gaia by Luke Jerram, which is a 7m wide model of the earth created using imagery from NASA. It's suspended high up in the abbey and slowly rotates. It's very beautiful and you get such a strong sense of how small and fragile our planet is - it's very affecting.
Last night was the opening night and the author Samantha Harvey discussed her book Orbital while sitting underneath the earth!
Orbital was my favourite book of 2024, and of course it won the Booker prize, so it was fantastic to hear her talk about writing it. She talked about how poor the first draft was and how incredibly different it was to the published version in terms of structure. She said she'd had a real crisis with it and had had to stop working on it, but there was something in it that kept calling her back and she couldn't let go of her longing to 'write words and sentences," so she had another go at it.
She was asked what she was trying to make readers feel with the book and I loved that she said something like "it's not really my business what readers feel. I wanted to see if I could use words to explore the things I feel when I look at images of the earth, the love and awe and grief I feel." She kept saying how much she loves writing sentences - that plot and character and structure are all well and good, but her real happy place is playing with words and arranging them in satisfying sentences. She came across as down to earth, shy, funny, and geeky, which is an excellent combo :-)

Gaia, by Luke Jerram, at The Old Painted Hall in London. The installation aims to create a sense of the Overview Effect (a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment) through mimicking the experience of astronauts passing the planet from afar. It was pretty beautiful at night, especially in the setting of the hall which is already so breathtaking.
