Defiance Rewatch: 3x13 - Upon the March We Fittest Die
Defiance 3x07
Alak Tarr
Alak interacting with an older version of his son
Alak has seen a lot of weird shit in his life. But nothing - nothing - holds a candle to the boy standing in front of him, claiming to be his son Luke.
Because Luke is a year old, and this boy is…
“How old are you?” Alak asks.
“Almost nineteen,” the boy replies.
Nothing in his life could ever prepare him for meeting his son from almost twenty years in the future.
“How are you here?” Alak demands. “How is this- Luke is sleeping in the other room. He’s a baby.”
“Honestly, this was kind of an accident,” says the boy that Alak still can’t quite believe is Luke, even if he looks just like Alak imagines Luke will look like when he grows up. “You’re supposed to be more careful with time travel. Aunt Irisa will yell at me for this.”
“Aunt Irisa?” Alak repeats. Irisa likes Luke, and she’s been helping out a lot with him, but no one’s called her Aunt Irisa. Honestly, Alak is a little worried she’d punch him if he tried.
“She made me promise to be careful,” maybe-Luke says. “But it’s not my fault the stupid thing glitched. I was supposed to go back sixty years, to see Earth before the Votans arrived. Nolan said I look human enough to pass.”
“Nolan said?” Alak repeats. That can’t be right. Nolan is gone and has been for months. Even Irisa has begun to lose faith that he’s ever coming back.
“Oh,” Luke says, blinking, “has Nolan not come back to Earth yet? Oops.”
Alak stares. “Nolan is gonna come back?”
Luke groans. “Aunt Irisa is going to kill me.”

Irisa and Alak start spending time together because of Luke. Alak calls her his best friend and Irisa says she's never had a best friend before.
“You know, he really does like you.”
“You say that a lot,” Irisa says, but she’s grinning a little as she bounces Luke on her hip.
“It’s true!” Alak protests. “He likes you!”
“I can see that.”
“And… I like you too.”
Irisa blinks. “You… What?”
“Not, like, not romantically or anything,” Alak says quickly. “Just, as a friend. You’re my best friend.”
Irisa looks down at Luke, avoiding Alak’s eyes. “I’ve never had a best friend before.”
“You do now,” Alak says. “If you want to.”
Irisa sneaks a peek up at Alak. “Okay,” she says. “Luke can be my best friend.”
Alak looks at her for a moment, then he snorts. “Okay,” he agrees. “And I’ll be your second-best friend.”
“You can be second best,” Irisa agrees.
Luke decides to take that moment to burble happily and then throw up in Irisa’s hair.
“Never mind,” Irisa says dryly, holding Luke an arm’s length away. “I’d prefer a best friend who doesn’t puke on me.”
“No take-backs,” Alak says in a sing-song voice, taking Luke out of her hands and wiping his face with a wet cloth. “We’re your best friends now, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
Irisa rolls her eyes, but even though there’s still spit-up in her hair, she wouldn’t trade her new best friends for anything.
something with alak and christie and baby luke?
This takes place between seasons 2 and 3.
It’s clear that Pilar isn’t fond of Votans. That being said, however, she’s making an effort with Alak. Alak would appreciate it, except for the fact that she’s kidnapped him and Christie.
The fact that he’s chained to the table doesn’t help either.
Christie is chained too, but her chain is longer than his. Maybe it’s because she’s human, or maybe it’s because she’s Pilar’s actual daughter, not just her son-in-law. Either way, it’s long enough that she can pace back and forth across the room with Luke, who’s screaming at the top of his little lungs, while Alak’s chain is so short that all he can do is sit and watch.
“Give him to me,” Alak finally says, when the helplessness of listening to his son scream has made his chest so tight he thinks he might explode.
Christie gratefully hands Luke off to him, sitting on the edge of the table in front of him. “I don’t know what to do,” she says, sounding as upset as he feels. “He won’t stop crying. He’s not hungry, and I don’t think he’s tired, but...”
“Why are you crying, little one?” Alak asks in sing-song Castithan. Pilar doesn’t like it when he and Christie speak Castithan, but Pilar is upstairs sleeping, and Quentin is checking the traps around the house, so there’s no way she could know.
“Maybe he wants to get out of here,” Christie says, switching to Castithan as well. “I do too.”
“Do you want to go back to Defiance?” Alak asks Luke, bouncing him a little. “Do you want to go home?”
Luke just keeps screaming. Feeling a little desperate, Alak starts to sing a lullaby he remembers his mother singing to him when he was little. His singing voice isn’t very good, but apparently the crooning melody is enough to calm Luke down. Slowly, Luke’s screams quiet.
“You did it,” Christie says with a small smile. “I guess he just wanted his dad.”
Alak tentatively stops singing. Luke, thankfully, remains quiet.
“It’s a song my mom used to sing to me,” he says. “I can teach you, if you want.”
“Maybe someday,” Christie says. “Once we’re out of here.”
“Do you think my parents are going to come for us?” Alak asks.
“Your parents and my dad, probably,” Christie says. “Even prison wouldn’t stop him.”
Neither of them mention the fact that something was clearly about to happen in Defiance before they left, and they have no guarantee that anyone there is still alive.
“We’ll get out,” Alak says, reaching out for Christie. “We won’t be here forever.”
“We’ll get out,” Christie agrees, taking Alak’s hand and squeezing it.
And Alak believes it, because if he wants to get through this - and he’s going to get through this, Christie and Luke are both counting on him - he has to.
