Efflorescence

You’d been Minami’s personal concierge for quite some timenow, and even still you’ve not become accustomed to his childlike nature. Sure,it was endearing, but sometimes he went waytoo far for his own good. You weren’t exactly jumping to help him when he madehis childlike requests, feeling more like his mother than his concierge.

Mother… What was Minami’s family like? You couldn’t help butthink back to your own family.

Your father was a theatre director, but your mother… Younever spoke of your mother.

It’s not like your mother was ever in your life to beginwith.

You weren’t intended by your parents, and your mother didn’teven want to keep you. Your father did all he could to raise you, and alwaysfelt like he wasn’t enough, and that he brought you into this world unfairly.Still, you loved your father and the effort that he put into raising you, andappreciated him. Although he was always busy traveling, always busy with work, yourfather always made time for you and did his best for you.

It was hard for you not think about what Minami’s father mustbe like. You remembered their interactions from the first party you attended withhim, and how Minami paraded you around as his ‘toy’, and how quickly the atmospherechanged when Keiichiro Kira approached you and the brothers. That cold, icylook that lingered in Minami’s eyes even when President Kira went away…

It terrified you. You never wanted to see that look on hisface.

Besides, it was your duty to make your guest happy, and ifthat came from his incessant teasing… Well, at least that look would never beone you’d be the cause of.

Even though the relationship between Minami and his fatherwas rough, you wished it wasn’t. You tried and urged him to make amendswith his father, to which he laughed off nonchalantly. While he smirked, youcould see in his eyes that this was a topic he longed to stray away from.

“It’s not worth my time. He’s a stubborn man that tries toget what he wants, and I won’t give him that satisfaction.”

His brow furrowed into that scowl that made your heart hurt,and you wanted to reach out and comfort him in any way that you could.

“But… Why?” You pried, speaking quietly before he turned hiscold glare on you. “Why can’t you try to get along with your father…? He’s theonly family you have, besides your brother.” You knew of the brother’sdifferent mothers, but had never dared to bring it up. The way your heartweighed with pain at his expression, your words slip past your mouth before youcan stop it. “You should be more grateful to your family members –“

“What do you know about family?” He shouted, doubling toface you and quick to close your distance. “You know nothing about mine, so stop trying to act like some mediator. Youare my concierge, not my therapist!”

It was the first time Minami had raised his voice at you inanger. You stood there, dumbfounded and staring up into his piercing eyes, heartthudding heavily in your chest. It’s myfault he’s angry, it’s my fault this time…

“You know nothing about that horrible man, or my mother, ormy life. Besides,” he continued, a distant and wistful smirk unfurling at hislips, “You had everything you needed growing up anyway.”

Your eyes widened at his words, and anger welled inside ofyou. How could he assume such a thing?Even though you’d done the same about his life, the fact that he had theaudacity to assume your life was all glitter and gold upset you.

“Do you know how wrong you are?!” Your voice shrill in yourthroat, you find your voice becoming louder and your rising anger. “You don’tknow what it was like for me, what it’s like to not have a mother! I grew upwith nothing – you grew up with all your money and power! You were practicallyborn with everything on a silver platter!”

Minami had turned to face away from you, skulking off to hisroom when he stopped in his tracks. Slender fingers ran through his hair, andturning around on his heel, you were met with another frightful glare.

Closing the distance again, his hands pressed against yourshoulders and you up against the wall, your head thumping against the wall.Grimacing in pain, you try to protest, but Minami overpowers you and keeps yourarms pinned to the wall.

“You’re such a stupid woman.” His voice was even as he spoketo you. “You think that just because now life is like this, that it’s alwaysbeen?” His eyes narrowed, brow furrowed in disgust at your words. “You’recompletely wrong. You grew up with no mother? I grew up losing mine. It alwayshurts more to lose something that you’ve established a relationship, doesn’tit? Isn’t that why you hang on so tightly to me?”

In his rage, you can see the hurt in his eyes, the distancein his emerald hues. Your heart ached, and you regretted your words instantly,and your inability to control your own anger. You willed time to rewind, but itcontinued forward before he pushed you to the side, disposing of you.

“I’ll be back later tonight. Don’t wait up.”

You watched as he walked out, the door slamming behind himas you slumped against the wall. The wetness pricking at your eyes finallyspilled over, and you sobbed where you sat. You stepped out of line, you hurthim in a way that you never wanted. But the way he reacted… Would he have reacted the same way if itwasn’t me?  And of course, you didn’tlisten, and you waited up for him.

In the early hours of the morning, Minami attempted to silentlyslink back in to the suite, only to be greeted by you sitting at the kitchencounter. You stood straight immediately, fixing your uniform and making sureyou were presentable to him.

“Welcome home, Mr. Minami,” you greeted.

His eyes were outlined and framed by dark bags, and youfigured he went out partying again to distract himself. You went to approachhim, but he was already moving toward you. The expression on his face wassofter than the one eight hours prior, leaving and empty, innocent, and sadface behind.

“M-Mr. Minami…?”

He doesn’t speak, tossing his blazer to the couch beforeapproaching you, feeling his breath on your forehead. He raised both hands andyour eyes snapped shut immediately, preparing yourself for his yelling toresume, only to be pleasantly surprised to feel the warmth of his body envelopyou.

“Eh..?!”

His arms wrapped around your shoulders, pulling you closerinto his body and hugged you, squeezing you, as if he let go, you’d disappear.He remained silent, the sound of your heartbeat and his breathing lining up intime with each other. A hand slid down and rested at the small of your back,and your face flushed with embarrassment.

His voice broke the silence, and the low vibration of hissoft voice tickled in your ear.

“Please…”

That was all he murmured, and you could hear exhaustion,pain, and fear in his voice. You knew what he meant, and your arms snakedaround his arm in return, pulling him closer and holding him together, holdinghim up.

“I won’t leave.”
