My entry for tattle-crime's Lure Lecter contest!
I chose the forever classic Opéra cake <3
It seemed like the obvious choice for me, as I bake better than I cook. And of course, the name of the cake helped.
Since Hannibal likes to get all fancy schmancy with decoration, I decided to do the same.
I added a bloody sugar glass blade for Jack, rose petals for Alana (remember the tomato roses? yeah, me too), and cut the cake like Hannibal cut Beverly in little bits (hear that ugly sobbing in the background? dat me).
Disclaimer: I've never done this cake before, so I'm aware of all the imperfections there are :|
Edit: Sooo... What's in that cake?
It has three different layers that go as follow:
- Almond sponge cake (aka Biscuit Joconde; if you have nuts allergy, this cake unfortunately isn't for you)
- Coffee and vanilla bean buttercream
- Dark chocolate ganache with whipping cream and sugar
- Dark chocolate icing
- Sugared (cristallized maybe?) real red rose petals
- Bloody sugar glass (the glass is just sugar and water boiled to 280°F, and the blood is honey, water and food coloring)
- Golden sugar (it's just fine sugar with golden coloring)
Difficulty: 3/5 because it does require a bit of technique (hint: don't screw the buttercream)
Time: 5/5 (it took me 3 lifetimes to complete it; also it's best if you chill it overnight, makes it easier to cut)
Budget: 2/5 (unless you go all fancy and buy chocolat de couverture that costs $15/lb and go the extra mile to buy all the fancy kitchen tools to make it 110% perfect, it's not that expensive to make)
