1 | LA TETE EN BAS
Loosely based on the novel by Noëlle Châtelet
The desire to adapt Noëlle Châtelet's novel first came from Paul's story itself, and through his story, the chance to explore the notion of gender confusion and the struggle for identity. What first drew our attention in the novel was the biological nature of this state: it is the body that is in play and the hero's identity depends on the reality of his body.
The novel serves as a basis for the live performance's narrative structure and through the story we wish to lead the audience into the world of the protagonist's dreams and nightmares. Inserted between scenes following a classic narrative structure appear scenes of fantasies, of Paul's inner ghosts, which while they occur as imaginative deliriums, are tightly structured and choreographic, showing the rich artistic and human complexities of this person. As the narrative develops, this inner world begins to take up more and more space, increasingly spilling over into the realist narrative. Everyday objects and gestures find themselves transformed in Paul's inner “dreams” and begin to take on new meanings. Vahram Zaryan
2 | MATER REPLIK
Director, Vahram Zaryan
Performers: Lusy Zaryan, Vahram Zaryan
Why choose to entitle this piece Mater Replik? We liked the wordplay between the Latin word ‘mater’ meaning mother and the French phrase ‘ma terre’ (literally ‘my land’) suggesting a motherland. Replik is a foreign word which echoes the French noun ‘réplique’, meaning a response or a reply, and which also has the sense of giving a cue-line in the theatre, which we liked here in a performance without any spoken text, one focusing rather on the repetitive and obsessive dialogue between body and soundscape. 'Replik' also suggests the aftershocks of an earthquake : a distant memory jolting into the present moment with the force of an earthquake. Significantly too, 'mater' is a word from a dead language and 'replik' a word from an unfamiliar language.
Mater Replik is a contemporary mime performance exploring exile and attempting to understand the internal experience of a physical and emotional uprooting. It is one story of many, that of a person removed from their land. The explosive experience of initially being uprooted is followed by a series of aftershocks which are physically visible on the body - the past which haunts, the motherland which reveals itself, the mother tongue which articulates all of this, and the language of the land itself.
