Thoughts about Luna... *massive spoilers*
The more I think about it, the more I think that the bird pendant was kind of a fucked up gift for Luna on the part of whoever gave it to her. I’m sure that wasn’t the intention, but when you consider the pendant as a sort of symbol of Luna herself, it’s pretty messed up.
First, the blue bird itself is a caged songbird. Not really subtle, there. The bird is kept locked away, for the enjoyment and amusement only of the person who owns it. It leads a limited, sad life, where its own happiness is irrelevant.
Then, the fact that it’s also a music box, or a machine. Not only is it a caged songbird, but it only ever had that purpose to begin with. It was built only to be trapped, only to serve others with its song. And it doesn’t have a choice, either. Someone winds it up, and it has no choice but to sing.
Luna is a lot like that mechanical, caged songbird. She was probably built in Rhizome-9. She probably has never left the facility, let alone seen anything other than the barren moonscape. She was built for just two purposes: 1) to participate in the AB Game in R-9, and 2) to act as a mother figure for Kyle. Note that both of these purposes involve serving other people, acting as a tool in someone else’s agenda. Her happiness really isn’t a factor, and she has little choice but to “sing” for other people while in her “cage”.
Now, I don’t think that it was Doctor Sigma’s (if that’s the theory you follow, that HE gave it to her) intention in giving it to her. I think that the Doc was genuinely concerned for Luna’s well-being and happiness. And, as Luna shows in her route, she is capable of disregarding her orders and making her own decisions when it really matters. But the implications behind the caged bird are awful and, frankly, a little horrifying. It becomes even more so when you consider that Luna will probably never leave the facility in that timeline, either. She’s stuck, at least until someone decides that she’s no longer useful or wanted, until she’s discarded. She’ll never be able to see the sky or breathe fresh air, she’ll never meet other people, she’ll never be able to wear a wedding dress…
