Lightning Returns Luxerion Main Quest
i’m sure this has been hammered to death endlessly both in academia and in fancircles but the trope in a few final fantasy games? where you confront and kill god and his agents as representives from a ruthless hegemonic organization that carries the pretense of moral authority? i wonder how directly it stems from the historical and social fabric of japanese society.
like in a lot of asian countries, japan’s intertwinement with catholicism in particular has often been a deeply political and bitter one. a faith used as an insidious proxy to make inroads in the name of mercantilism and european colonialism...a less expensive alternative to outright violence, and often a precursor to it. japan at one time made it illegal to be a christian, a crime punishable by death, after it closed its country to outsiders during the times of the shogunate. the persistent taint - questioning the true underlying intentions of religious hegemony - spring up occasionally in final fantasy. and when it appears, catholic aesthetic motifs are explicitly invoked even if the corrupt religious institution in the game that wears those catholic motifs is really more representative of shinto, buddhist, and/or greek pantheonic concepts.
idk man i guess i just wonder. it seems like the writers invoke these motifs unconsciously, like they are tapping into the pulse of something ineffable, something cross-generational. in lieu of offering a proper deconstruction i wonder what it means in its cultural context, is all.
The evil savior will die at the hands of the shadow hunter.

"Luxerion" from the Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII OST Something about this reminds me of the Oakfield theme in Fable 2.
