Luxury Mane - Gold Standard⁠ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ @luxurymaneband #luxurymane #luxurymaneband #theposies #alternative #psych #powerpop #newwave⁠ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ It's bittersweet that this is the 4th and final album from Florida band Luxury Mane that I'll be covering here (until, of course, they put out a new record!). I first connected with them last year when they sent me their discography minus the first album and I ended up liking it so much that I bought a copy of the first one too, just to make sure I had the whole run. This band is a beautiful project from some dudes in Florida that love the Posies as much as they love themselves, and they definitely have a hilarious (and earned!) sense of self-esteem...poke around on their Facebook page to see what I mean. They're super talented, they're funny, and they seem to be about something bigger, nay funner (!), than just being a pop band. It's one part psych, two parts power pop, a half dash of Modern English, and one big garnish of their idols, The Posies. ⁠ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ Perhaps my favorite part of this band isn't just the music itself but the earnest and sincere people behind it. It's easy for me to get jaded by the big names that sometimes grace this page but so often the hardworking bands you've never heard of are the most down-to-earth and focused on their art. Not too awfully long ago, the "devastatingly handsome" Billly Summer thanked me for the coverage and for taking time to listen to what they were all about. I said it then and I'll say it now in front of a jury of their peers, It's absolutely my pleasure. Thank YOU for making music that evokes simpler, happier, and more enjoyable times in my life, Luxury Mane. Luxury Mane - Lux Runnin’ Out @luxurymaneband #luxurymane I’m comin at ya with another album from St. Petersberg (FL) psych pop band Luxury Mane called Lux Runnin’ Out. I covered their most recent album at the beginning of February and have spent quite a bit of time playing their back catalog this month. It’s probably obvious at this point that I am REALLY feeling this band and their unique brand of psych that leans as much as on pop sensibilities as it does flangers and reverb pedals. I’m working my way back through the catalog and once I hit this album, I started to hear more elements that reminded me of Brian Jonestown Massacre and super early Dandy Warhols at times and both of those are very good things to me. The songwriting is just as tight and catchy as their latest work, but there’s still a little bit of patina on the sound that remains from their earlier days of lo-fi surfer friendly pop (I still can’t stop listening to “Youth Envy”). This is clearly a band who has developed a really great writing and performing rapport with one another and you can hear how tight the rhythm section is under the jangle and echo of the vocals and lead guitar lines. I’ve pre-apologized for using the term “psych” in past reviews only because it is used as a put down as much as it is a truly descriptive genre because lazy psych music (and we all know examples of it) isn’t much beyond noisy soundscapes to get spun out to. I want to be very clear that Luxury Mane is not of that ilk. In fact, on this album in particular, some of their songs are more akin to 90s era Brit Pop at times. I’m also still entertained by their presentation of self with tongues firmly planted in cheek, too (check out their list of self-bestowed awards on Facebook to see what I mean).
