the rain had started out as a drizzle. harmless. almost pleasant, really. and then, it had turned into an absolute downpour within minutes. soledad let out an offended gasp as she hurried beneath the nearest awning, tugging her oversized hoodie over her head while trying and failing to protect her hair from the sheets of water pouring from the sky. “oh, absolutely not.” she laughed, shaking water from her sleeves before running both hands through her damp curls. “this is no way to behave, mother nature.” her gaze lifted toward the clouds as if they had personally wronged her. she probably looked like a wet cat or damp poodle now. “i spent forty-five minutes on my hair today. forty-five whole minutes.” she sighed dramatically. “wasted.”
the sight of another person nearby caught her attention and immediately her smile returned, bright and effortless despite the situation. “you see this?” she pointed accusingly toward the rain before looking back at them. “this is betrayal.” she shook her head and a soft laugh escaped her as she scooted over to make room beneath the awning. “come on, sugar. there's no sense in us both getting wet. are you parked nearby or were you on a walk?"
