So.. the old detective had taken a child under his wing. And even Tomas had to smile at the obviously hodge-podged badge. “Just some business. Trade. I’m owed a few caps.” it wasn't entirely untrue, but it was far from the full story. It was more of a manhunt, but he couldn’t very well explain that to a child working alongside the city’s one detective. “Oh? What ‘bad guys’ are on the run from you today?”

“Well, I didn’t say that there was - after all bravery merely stems from fear, and the willingness to move forward regardless.” In his armor, such a drop from the sharp overhang was no problem. But for the younger girl.. she’d likely break much more than an ankle without such protection. After a moment of thought, he held out a hand. If she wanted to turn back and go home, she could. But if she wanted to continue following him on their little adventure, she’d have to trust him to protect her as he jumped.

“.....genes.” he appeared perplexed - confused and maybe a little concerned that such a child would have the nerves to come up to him. To most, he was satisfactorily intimidating.Maybe this child had no concept of fear for strangers that didn’t want anything to do with her. Or even too much to do with her, especially out in the Wasteland.
He shrugged. “Genetics have that effect - but also perspective, taking your own height into consideration.”

“I mean, do you object to a count? One,” and with that, he jumped. Upon landing, there was still a slight incline at the bottom, so he dropped and slid the rest of the way down on his behind. Once stopped, he got back to his feet and gently lowered Shelby to her own, keeping a hand on her shoulder to steady the fearful girl. “That wasn’t so bad, hm?”
