How do you think Bat would discover Ann/Lynn's secret? Would he be able to sense it, or would he catch a slip up? I really like the idea of him being the first to ever figure it out
I like it too! :) Hmm...well, I don’t think Bat would be able to sense it -- as sensitive as his senses are, it’s kind of restrained to just heightened smell, touch, and hearing, and his magical ability has decreased a lot since becoming a vampire, so he wouldn’t have that going for him either.
I think part of it would depend on how often Bat sees Ann vs. Lynn when they come to see him and how well Lynn is able to feign being Ann, whenever she’s in control. My instinct is she wouldn’t be that good at it, since she died as a preteen just before starting at Hogwarts, and that coupled with Ann’s constantly blood-shot eyes and especially her cracked wand would kind of clue Bat into the fact that something’s wrong with Ann’s health. Wands are meant to be used as conduits for magic, so from Bat’s deducation, if a wand is damaged simply from using magic, then it either signals that the magic is too wild and powerful to channel properly through a wand (unlikely, since Ann is still so young and shouldn’t know magic that powerful), or the wand is rebelling against its wielder.
At first Bat might suspect that Ann’s trying to use a wand that isn’t really hers -- but the confirmation that that’s not the case coupled with her shifts in behavior might get him doing some more research and help him come to the conclusion that the wand “chose” her, but changed its mind for some reason. Why, he can’t deduce, unless perhaps she’d lost a very consequential duel and the wand’s allegiance now belonged to someone else, so it was rebelling against her -- but as loyal as unicorn-haired wands are, pear wands are generally some of the most resilient ones out there and aren’t known for breaking easily (I picked pear and unicorn hair randomly, but according to Ollivander, owners of pear wands are generally popular people known for being warm-hearted, generous and wise, which I think suits Ann nicely -- if you pick something else, though, that’s totally fine, I just thought Bat having insight based on her wand would be logical XD). That’s when he starts to wonder if there’s something else at play, such as mental disassociation or possession.
Mental health in the Victorian era was preeeeetty much non-existent (asylums were kind of just where anyone with any psychological disorders ended up, and some of those people were just women tarred with the catch-all term “hysteria”), but even if that’s the case, Bat knows enough about magic to know that there could be other sources to Ann’s distress than something natural, so he explores the idea of possession first. He might try to subtly suss out whether there are any points where Ann has lost track of chunks of time or conveniently forgotten things, and upon finding out that no, she hasn’t, he might next try to feel out whether strong feelings of love or happiness affect Ann, since one known way to fight back against something possessing you (seen in OOTP when Voldemort tries to possess Harry) are through those sorts of intense feelings. If Bat saw some evidence that Ann was at least partially affected for the better when that happened, he might grow to suspect she’s being possessed, but because Ann hasn’t forgotten any of her activities, she must be aware of who or what is possessing her. That’s when Bat would finally put his cards on the table and let her know what he knows. And once he does know the details, he would want to somehow find a way to help both girls by making sure Lynn finds some sort of peace.
