Haven glints under the bright (though not warm) sun as Lyria makes her way to the gates, her stomach twisting into a shaking knot. 

Anxiety thumps in her chest and she tries to breathe steadily as she walks, the snow crunching under her every step. She, Varric, Cassandra and Solas are leaving for Redcliffe today and the importance of their mission is almost overwhelming. All of Thedas is counting on them to seal the Breach; they need to ally with the mages to have a chance at accomplishing that. And if they can make this alliance, if they can heal the sky with the mages’ help, might there be hope of a better future for all mages? This is the best chance they have of winning people’s support and trust and that hope burning in her stomach makes the fear of failure all the more potent. A crushing weight, a hand around her throat and they cannot lose this chance. 

Lyria reaches the gate and breathes in deeply, struggling to bury the panic, anxiety and worry clawing at her insides. 

Oh Andraste, bless those condemned for what we cannot choose. Bless those punished for the magic Our Maker gave us. Bless us that dream only of the freedoms everyone else has by right.

“There’s a shield in your hand; block with it!” 

Commander Cullen’s voice punctures the sorrow closing in around her and she looks over at the training field. Early morning sun touches the armour and weapons of the Inquisition’s soldiers and makes them shine as they practice, their commander moving through them with instructions and suggestions. 

“If that man was your enemy, you’d be dead!” he continues and Lyria bites her lip. Commander Cullen narrows his eyes as he sizes up his recruits, his voice stern and disciplined. So unlike the soft, patient tone he’d taken in her training and though she’d come out here to speak with him, Lyria is stuck in place, the snow sucking her boots in and holding firm. 

He’s busy, I shouldn’t interrupt.

Haven is a welcome sight after Val Royeaux. The horses pass through a clump of snow dusted pine and there it sits, a cheery painting nestled between the mountains. Buildings frosted in white, fat flakes of snow drifting lazily from the afternoon sky and sun glowing bright in the ice blue canvas above; were it not for the Breach’s eerie glow, the sight would be charmingly perfect. Lyria takes in the lake glittering with daylight, the soldiers milling beyond Haven’s gates, the curl of campfire smoke in the air, and it’s a relief to be back.  That thought hits like a catapult and Lyria jerks in Fox’s saddle.  When did Haven become somewhere she was glad to return to? “Something the matter?” Cassandra asks, having surely felt her convulsion, and Lyria startles. “No! No, I–I’m fine,” she says and forces her posture to soften. I’m…happy to be back? Lyria doesn’t know how she feels about this revelation, doesn’t know how she wants to feel, knows only that Haven no longer feeling like a cage has her world tilting and her thoughts jumbled. For nearly seventeen years she has yearned for a place she could live without terror haunting her every step, but she also knows it’s far too dangerous to get comfortable anywhere or to let her guard down. So why is she looking at Haven as someplace she is, not safe perhaps, but not hunted either?  Is she being hopelessly foolish? Lethally stupid? Or…can she truly let herself accept relief?

Love Letters 3/5

Love letter number three for @cullenromancers event, this time from an au where instead of being sent to Kirkwall after the events of Broken Circle, Cullen is transferred to the Circle in Ostwick. After all, what better place for him to recover than a Circle known to be sedate and calm?

-Strange occurrences began four months ago -Doors opening and closing without explanation -Doors locking and unlocking on their own -Sudden drops in temperature -Objects floating -Objects flying around the room -Disembodied whispering -Unexplained music -Red light with no source -Heavy Footsteps

-Multiple building inspections done since start of occurrences, none have uncovered anything that might explain what’s happening

-Brother Sebastian of Kirkwall Chantry, friend(?) of family suggested haunting. Said he sensed “evil presence” in house. -Arrange interview?

Cullen: How’s the research going? I should be by in half an hour, just picking up some extra gear. 

Ophelia: It’s going well! Half an hour works for us. Safety gear? I didn’t realize we were short.

Cullen: We aren’t for a normal job. But Kirkwall architecture is notoriously hostile. If corners could be cut, they were. Not to mention, I’m not sure anyone has ever enforced new standards. The entire manor’s probably made of asbestos.
