i think it would be really really funny if cullen thought dorian had feelings for fem inky and was jealous but resigned to never telling her how he feels cause he's pathetic and dorian is obviously better for her in every way. and he says this to one of the inner circle members and they almost piss themselves laughing
chapter 23 wip - unauthorized use of a government name
“Ella Lucille Trevelyan, I swear to the Maker and all that is holy if you keep deliberately misunderstanding me, I’ll—I’ll—”
Cullen broke off, mouth opening and closing as he searched for some appropriate repercussion, but finding none, instead just pointing nowhere with his useless finger.
Her eyes swept over him as he continued to gape like a fish. She ignored the question of how he knew her middle name—she would interrogate him about that later. No, instead, she huffed a laugh. She had bigger fish to fry. Bigger fish with golden hair and amber eyes who made her absolutely crazy.
He thought she was the one misunderstanding things? Her? Misunderstand him?
No. He was the idiot here.
Ella’s laughter echoed above the roar of the waterfall as she raised a brow in challenge. “What are you going to do, Curly? Throw a tantrum and try to write me up for… for throwing fifteen cakes in your face?”
Cullen pressed his lips into a tight line so quickly it was as if he were trying to hide a smile. His eyes flashed with something dark and heavy that made Ella’s pulse jump, but she pressed on. He wanted a fight, didn’t he? She wasn’t ready to concede just yet.
In for the crumb, in for the crust, as Gretta would say.
“Cullen’s romance is only for boring straight white women. Cullen’s romance is EW ICK!! A woman likes that??? Disgusting!!”
Y’all be so fr right now, do you hear yourselves? Why are we yucking someone’s innocent yum in the year of our Lord 2026. You don’t have to like his romance, but that doesn’t mean there has to be a moral reason for it, you can just not like it and move on. It’s actually like suuuuuper easy!
Also, way to go erasing the identities of all the gender diverse, racialized, LGBTQ+ folks who enjoy his romance. You did it! You defeated the evil monster of straight woman (all trad wives, by the way) who enjoys something and only sacrificed your own people to do it! Congrats!
One of my favourite Unreliable Narrator moments to this day is in DA:I after the Blackwall reveal, Cullen's assessment of Leliana having the report on Renier but not saying anything is that she probably didn't connect the two people together because she's got a blind-spot for Wardens.
I understand why that's a reasonable assessment from him; Her history with the wardens is common in-world knowledge, the plot of Leliana's song is not. However from an outside perspective, I think it's far more likely Leliana did know, but that she has a soft spot for those seeking redemption from their past, given her own history.
Another note on Cullen (sorry, lol) is that he didn’t just have a crush on the Warden, he was in love with her. You can tell that those feelings were very significant for him. He didn’t want anything to do with anyone in Kirkwall for obvious reasons and even if you don’t romance him, you can ask if he knew her and he either says it was a youthful infatuation or that she compelled him. If she romanced Leiliana, he asks about her. He is such a romantic, I’m going to throw up.

A moment of comfort
Though Cullen never spoke of his past as a templar, you knew enough about the Harrowing. A test every apprentice mage went through in the Circle of Magi, the actual contents of the trial a secret to all those outside the Circle. From the nightmares that he dealt with, much like the bad dream he was caught in now, the ending hand't always been happy.
He jolted awake suddenly just before his name left your lips in a concerned whisper.
"Are you okay?"
Cullen groaned softly, still caught between the waking world and a fitful slumber. Seeking you out like a flower turned towards the sun, he buried his head in the crook of your neck. Your fingers lightly carded through his blonde strands, feeling his entire body shiver before relaxing against you.
