Prompt 20
Might go to hell and there ain't no stopping
Might be a sinner and I might be a saint
I'd like to be proud, but somehow I'm ashamed
Sweet little baby in a world full of pain
I gotta be honest, I don't know if I could take it

song-R.I.P to my youth by The Neighbourhood
On frail wings of vanity and wax
Week 1 "All hail the mighty Dr. Winthrop, for the discovery of a cure for the deadly disease, Sustilin, in which made an outbreak in a small village of Guam. His knowledge concurs all. Our incompetence is his burden." Their words became thunder. Shaking my entire foundation. I am their hero. Their God. The sudden power of entitlement courses through me. My walk became taller. My voice was louder. I was standing in the spot light of success. In one instant my movements became inspiring and sought after just as my words weighed heavily on everyone's mind for I was there light. Their last hope. A messiah dressed in a white coat of honor. Come to me sheep. Let your women pleasure me, may your riches shower me, for I have given you back your lives. Week 2 "With this new development found in your antidote we could wipe out our enemies. If this could be weaponized to our standards you could make this country a little safer. Not to mention your research and discovery will not be ignored. Our CEO will reward you handsomely for the antidote and your name will be intact and connected to the creation of this remedy." Black suits. Dark glasses. These men held a different kind of strength. Not all physical but more of intelligence. As well as money. The money given to me from the village was unrecorded but also running low. These men looked the part of business but was I truly the kind of scientist to sell my life saving cure? I broke eye contact and focused on the piece of paper laid before me that detailed the transaction waiting to unfold before us. I did not want my research to go unaccredited. Yet I also did not want my discovery to become cheap. I needed money for a life and I believed I deserve a lot of such for the work I put in. "Dr. Winthrop, understand that we can also give you access to databases that can help you further other ongoing projects that you may have side countered. We can also grant you the materials to begin solid experimenting with other opportunities of cures. We, Dr., can give you what you may need to cure cancer itself." Sweat dropped from my forehead. My heartbeat so loud I was sure they wanted to cover their ears. Years of scientists trying to put together the pieces to destroy cancer, so many failures of mixtures, too many trials of errors endured by the brightest of our generation finally restored if I just sold my recipe to an interested buyer. Would they revolt against me? The numerous doctors who have given their lives to protect the study of human life? Or would they applaud me? For taking the leap of faith into unknown waters surrounded by the possibility of curing a person with terminal cancer? I imagined myself engulfed in my laboratory with all these newly added equipment, starting genuine research on everything I've ever wanted to work with. What is a few enemy lives to sacrifice for the greater good? Nothing is worth more than saving the lives of only our people. Week 3 "Have you ever been with a girl like me before doctor?" I smile. She clashes into me like a wave of pure lust. She was not the only one. I had many women with me. They kept the loneliness at bay. My choices have not yet made consequences. I was living in an ignorant bliss. My bed laid in the middle of an enormous office built for scientific research. The walls were windows with the decoration of a chic New York City hotel. Downstairs became my work area, riddled with samples and equipment. This is where I want to stay. Forever. Entangled within beautiful women. While the hunger to do more was at my fingertips. Week 4 "A new substance is being used to kill innocent people in Afghanistan. Women and children are being exposed to it causing a death count of 356 to rise daily. We're not sure where the substance originated from." The news blared on. I sat in the kitchen with eyes wide open. My new interest sat naked on the couch, she changed the channel without concern. The color of the liquid stayed on my mind. This tragedy was because of me. That substance was gathered from my cure. It was not meant to hurt the innocent only the fearsome. How could this be? Once the liquid is looked at there will be no doubt that they will discover my deal with those men. I will be ruined. Week 5 "Do not remember me for my action of selfishness. Remember me as the Dr. Winthrop who just wanted to help." I've become a monster in their eyes. The once noble doctor has become a mere traitor of the human race. My choice will not leave me for I m reminded of it every time I open my eyes. The people spit at me now. Hate emanates from their stature. I stand now in Icarus's shadow. Infamous for destroying himself, just as I have. I became so aware of the aesthetic features upon my work that I paid no attention to the height in which I climbed. I was doomed the moment I took flight on frail wings of vanity and wax.
