M. Shane is set to release his first solo single, “Buried Alive,” on Echis Records.
“Buried Alive” is a solo acoustic piece drenched in darkness, reminiscent of Neil Young’s Ditch Trilogy period. Recorded live to 1/4″ tape, the song captures the haunting, desolate beauty of the desert that has become a hallmark of M. Shane’s evolving style. The minimalist production calls to mind Tom Waits’ later records as well as The Felice Brothers, Townes Van Zandt, and Neurosis frontman Steve Von Till’s solo projects.
M. Shane has been around in one form or another since 2010, his trademark red Les Paul becoming a staple of the Washington, D.C. independent music scene. His previous (and very electrified) projects, Pushing Giants and Spilling Blood, have earned critical acclaim. Now trading in a howling Fender amp for an acoustic guitar, M. Shane continues to push the boundaries of his artistry, marrying dark post-acoustic natural blues with age-old American folk traditions.
“I have always been interested in a more audio verite approach to recording, probably due entirely to the overwhelming influence Crazy Horse has had on me,” M. Shane says.
“I like to hear the creaking of the floors in whatever makeshift studio we’re set up in and everything else that’s a natural part of human beings making music with microphones. I think it ends up fitting with the subject matter and the overall sound of the song because like almost every other musical thing that I gravitate to…. this one is a downer.”
“Buried Alive” will be available on all major streaming platforms starting 7/19/24. For more information about M. Shane and his upcoming releases, please visit echisrecords.com.
