When the theater department is down on it’s luck and has to bring in record breaking sales at the end of the school year in order to garner sponsors or else they’ll be defunded, the lead invites a few dance majors to practice one Saturday morning. One volunteers his class to fill in for the ensemble just to see a smile. It all leads to two semesters of chaos in putting together a student written and composed musical, drama amongst friend groups, and a dance major falling in love with a set designer.

San and Yunho were sitting in the front row of the theater. They’d been waiting there for nearly twenty minutes now, San making the excuse to you that he had an early exam and didn’t want to risk waking you in the morning when he had to leave.
The doors swing open and San tenses up, not turning to look as Yunho stands up. He hears Mingi’s foot steps slow, eyes flickering between both men.
“What’s this?” He narrows his eyes at Yunho, clenching his jaw.
Yunho let’s put a breath, taking a few steps towards him. “San is my best friend. And I’d be an idiot to let you do anything to sabotage his relationship or this show which could make or break this entire department, and more importantly the future career of the woman you say you love.”
Mingi rolls his eyes and steps back, crossing his arms over his chest as he laughs bitterly. “You think you know anything about this? He took her from me.”
San stands up, turning to face the two men as they stand off, “I didn’t take anyone. I didn’t end a relationship when there wasn’t one there to end anyway. You didn’t appreciate her when you had her. You didn’t make her feel loved. Do you understand how many times I’ve had to reassure her because of stuff you did? When I asked her to be my girlfriend, she told me I didn't have to do that, because of you.”
Mingi bites back a look of surprise, though the brief flash of confusion on his face is enough for San to take a few steps toward him, “You don’t realize just how much damage you did to her do you? And now you think ruining this show is supposed to save you in her eyes? When she finds out what you’ve done, she’s going to hate you.”
“Hates a pretty strong word.”
All three men look to the stage as you step out from behind one of the curtains. Your hands are clasped together in front of you.
Yeosang isn’t too far behind you. He smiles apologetically, “I tried to keep her at home… She, uh, threatened to call Jongho.”
You glance over at him, shaking your head and carefully heading down the darkened stairs, your gaze going from San to Mingi. San walks over to you, cupping your face carefully between both of his hands, “What’re you doing here?”
“I saw your phone when you were getting ready to leave,” you mumble, looking up at him. It was getting harder to hold your tears back but you had to face Mingi first before you allowed yourself to cry. You bring your hands to San’s smiling reassuringly before pulling his hands away.
Stepping around him, you get a good look at Mingi, your heart rate picking up. He stares quietly, his expression unchanging as you yourself struggle to come up with some kind of response to his betrayal.
“Why…?”
You’re quiet. So quiet and he’s never heard you quite like this before. He lets out a little breath and looks away, unable to face you now that you know what he’s done. “I just… I couldn't lose you.”
“So you wanted to somehow frame San… Or just thought I’d come running to you when the show failed? Do you realize this could damage my future? Or do you just not care at all?” You’re standing directly in front of him now.
“Don’t say I don’t care. Of course I care.”
Smack.
Mingi’s hand comes up to his face where your hand had made contact. His mouth falls open in surprise, unsure of how to respond, but he knows his cheek stings from your harsh slap.
“You care? You have a funny way of showing it. I was willing to be friends with you. You never reached out unless it was to make jabs at San or showing up unannounced. If you don’t want to lose me completely, you better start begging.” You weren’t even mad. Just disappointed. “At one point in time, you were one of the only people I trusted. Now, I dont even fucking know you anymore, Mingi. Who are you?”
You take a step back and Mingi reaches out, expecting you to disappear.
“Please don’t leave. Let me explain…”
“Explain what?” San steps forward, pushing Mingi’s hand down so he couldn’t touch you. “How you wanted to destroy her?”
“That’s… Yeah. Okay… You’re right. I wanted to pick up the pieces and I’m sorry. Okay. And I definitely deserved that slap and more… There’s no way for me to truly express… And I realize that I’m fucking losing you all over again. I just… I wanted the chance to change and show you I could be what you wanted and needed… And he beat me to it.”
“He didn’t beat you to anything. He just showed me what I really deserved.” You hold a hand out, “Give me the keys. And please leave. If you want anything to do with me, then you’ll drop this sabotage act, okay? Please Mingi.”
Mingi stares down at you before fishing the auditorium keys out of his pocket. He drops them in your hand gently, taking a few steps back before turning to leave. He pauses halfway up the aisle and sighs, “I promise I’ll make this up to you.”
Yunho rolls his eyes and shakes his head, “Doubtful but good luck, dude.”

San stares back at the man in your doorway, biting his tongue and tightening his fist around the phone in his hand. He clears his throat and takes a step back to let Mingi into your home. “She’s in the shower.”
“Oh. I can wait.”
San exhales through his nose, shutting the door and stepping past the man as he pulls his shoes off to leave them by the door. He walks down the hallway and pushes your bathroom door open a bit so that he could speak with you quietly.
Mingi makes himself at home on the sofa, looking at the food that’s set out and the scented candle that was lit in the middle of the table. He hears the water cut off, watching as San comes back down the hallway and takes a seat on the opposite end of the sofa. He eyes the slightly older man, wondering how long he had been waiting to slither into his spot as Y/N’s favorite person.
San tries his best to busy himself with the food in front of him, plating some of your favorites for you but not offering any to the man he was worried would be ruining your night in with him. He glanced at Mingi, meeting his eye, “What?”
Mingi shakes his head, clicking his tongue and glancing to the hallway once again as he waits for you to appear.
San rolls his eyes and leans forward to continue piling your favorites onto your plate. He begins to do the same to his own plate as you enter the room.
You awkwardly take the remaining seat between the two of them, watching as San pushes your plate towards you. You smile at him, thanking him quietly before turning to Mingi. “What’re you doing here?” Your eyes widen and you quietly apologize, not realizing how harsh that sounded.
“Can’t I come see my favorite girl?” Mingi manages to smile in spite of everything, his gaze flickering to San when he winces.
You frown and shake your head, “Don’t call me that… You’re allowed to see me, but you knew San was coming over.”
Mingi scoffs and leans forward with his arms on his knees, clasping his hands together, “And you’ve been avoiding talking about us.”
You remain quiet for a moment, nodding thoughtfully. “I have… but you also need to remember every other time I tried to talk about us…” You can feel San’s hand slip into your lap, squeezing your thigh reassuringly. “It didn’t seem to make much of a difference then, so why should it now? Things are… They’re over between us Mingi. And I’ve been avoiding it because I am honestly not ready to face all of that and you.”
“So does it not matter that I’ve been ready to talk about it?”
“You’re only ready to talk about it because she got tired of waiting on you,” San finally breaks his silence, subconsciously attempting to pull you a little closer. And you let him.
“No one asked you, Choi.”
San finds himself laughing bitterly while you’re still stuck awkwardly between the two, not knowing what to say. “Yeah, but honestly, it’s better than you talking over her or talking down on her feelings. If she’s not ready, you should give her time. You broke her heart and she got tired of it. So what if she’s moving on? Let her. Or would you rather her be fucking miserable like you? If you really give a shit, you’d be happy that she’s happier than when she was you.”
You look up at San, your eyes widening as he defends you against Mingi. You open your mouth to speak, stuck between scolding him when you could handle it and thanking him for doing so.
However, Mingi beats you to it. He stands as he practically explodes, ready to go off and probably looking for a physical fight with San, “I fucking came here to talk to Y/N, not her little lap dog. So why don’t you mind your own fucking business?”
You quickly stand up, practically going toe to toe with the man as San stands up, slipping his arm around your waist to pull you back. “Out. Get out, Song Mingi. I’m sick of it. You do not get to come into my home and fucking disrespect my friends.”
He opens his mouth, gesturing at San behind you who remained as stoic as he could, fighting off a small smile, “And he’s allowed to talk shit to me?”
“San didn’t say anything that wasn’t true, whether it was his place or not,” you glance at him, giving him a stern look. “You showed up uninvited and unannounced to my apartment. You do not get to talk to him any kind of way you want to. I meant what I said outside the theater that day, I’m done waiting for you Mingi. I did it for as long as I could handle and now it’s time for me to put myself first. Okay?”
You pause for a brief moment before continuing, “There’s honestly… not an us to really talk about. If you want to explain why you kept avoiding the topic of becoming official, or the fact that you were still talking to other girls, fine. But I want to do that on my own terms and not with you bombarding me and disrespecting me like this. And right now, your chances of getting to be open about that, are getting smaller and smaller. So do me a favor and please just leave…”
“Y/N…” Mingi whispers, holding his hands out. He felt sick. He felt like crying. But he had this all coming.
“If you want to save any bit of our friendship, you will give me space, Mingi. But right now, I need you to leave.” You point at the door behind him, taking a deep and shaky breath.
The man seems to straighten up, his gaze dropping to see San’s fingers dancing across your waist in a soothing manner. He takes a step back, grabbing his coat and slipping his shoes back on. He looks back at you one more time, clenching his jaw before stepping out and shutting the door so quietly, San himself could barely hear it.
You turn in the man’s embrace, slipping your arms around his shoulders and pressing your face against his chest. He holds you tight with one arm around you, his other hand coming to cradle the back of your head as he sways you side to side ever so slightly.
“It’s okay… I’m so proud of you,” he whispers, his lips brushing against your temple as he speaks. “You did so good, baby girl. I’m here. Good job.” He hums a quiet tune, content to hold you for as long as you needed.

San only lives ten minutes from the Italian restaurant that you two agreed to meet at. He’d texted you to inform you that he’d be waiting and would already have a table by the time you arrived. You hadn’t texted back and he wasn’t too worried, you told him you were at the auditorium working on the sound system, he needed only to wait patiently for your arrival.
But he was nervous.
Sure, you’d spoken and spent time together at rehearsals, but he wasn’t sure if it could really be classified as hanging out when he was actually busy asking you questions about what you were working on and what you were doing to prepare for the show.
He was excited to get to see you in person outside of working. Though given the circumstances, he had to be careful of what he did or said. He knew the reason he had to talk to you had a lot to do with his obvious crush on you and volunteering his class for the musical, causing one of his very best friends to fire off at him any chance he got.
His head snaps up as you sit down across from him and he finds himself blushing, smiling softly at you.
“I’m sorry I’m late. I had to go home and change. I was all sweaty after working on everything. The lights on stage get way too hot,” you laugh nervously and peel off your coat, soaking in the warm restaurant air.
He shakes his head when you apologize, “It’s no problem. No need to apologize. I hope you don’t mind, I ordered wine for the two of us… I, uh, thought we both might need it to loosen up.”
You grin at him and lean forward, “Red or white?”
He blinks at you surprised, raising a brow before smiling just as brightly at you, “Red. Is that a problem?”
“Not at all.” You smile and watch as he nods, dropping his gaze to his menu.
You can’t help but let your gaze run over his features, from his brows, to his jaw, to the way his lips purse as he ponders over his options. His blonde hair falls into his eyes and you hum softly, tilting your head slightly.
“Why are you staring at me?” He laughs and closes the menu as the waiter comes by and pours the wine, disappearing with a promise to be back soon.
Your cheeks flush and you laugh nervously, shaking your head. “I wasn't staring. I was thinking. We’ve never spent time together like this… I’m just… Observing!” You clap your hands together, proud of your own defense, but he still doesn’t seem convinced.
With one look from him, you sit back and sigh, running your hands over your face, only for your eyes to flicker back up to him. He hasn’t once torn his attention away from you and your heart flutters in a way you were expecting nor were you used to it. Usually, Mingi was always on his phone.
“Does it have anything to do with what you wanted to talk about?”
You look away at his question, a bit ashamed but you nod, knowing you aren’t doing yourself any favors by allowing yourself to feel this way with someone who was essentially offering to be your therapist right after a break up, if you could even call it that.
“Here,” you pull your phone out, pulling up the messages from the group chat from earlier that day. “At the very least, Yeosang and Hongjoong made up.” You slide the phone across the table, allowing him to take it. Your hand comes up to your mouth as your elbow rests on the table, subconsciously gnawing on your thumbnail.
San reads the messages, his brows furrowed before he smiles at you, “That’s great! Oh, fuck wait…” He winces, glancing back at the screen when he realizes that they were expecting you and Mingi to talk now.
“Right!” You huff, bringing the wine to your lips and taking a rather larger gulp. “I mean, I know it’s not that big of a deal, but I don't have anything to say to Mingi really. And Jongho and Yeo were both the ones tired of how Mingi treated me… So why should I even give it a chance?”
“Maybe to clear the air?” He sets your phone back on your side of the table, only to quickly speak up again, “Hear me out, okay? Think of it as getting closure. If the two of you can get closure, maybe that will take away the awkwardness or how tense things are in the group chat.”
You stare at him for a minute, processing it and thinking about how south things could go if you do this, but at the same time… San was right. It could absolutely give you what you need and make things much easier to deal with afterwards. “Okay. That… Yeah. That makes sense.”
“If you want, I can sit with you while you talk to him? You don’t have to talk to him in person, I know that can be really hard after a… break up.”
You laugh at that and you shake your head, “You’re already doing a lot more for me then you actually have to…”
“Y/N. I want to. I actually like you… I mean, I want to be your friend!” He smiles despite the blush on his cheeks, having to play off his own little confession.
“You’re so sweet… Thank you… I think I’ll do that. It’ll definitely be easier with someone there.” You smile up at him before tucking your phone away. “Enough about me! Your turn now… What did you wanna talk about?”
His eyes suddenly widen and it’s almost like he’d forgotten he had something to talk about too. “Oh… Okay, so Yunho, the tall guy in my class that’s doing the ensemble with me?” He hopes his description is enough, “Since I volunteered the class to do this… He’s been on my ass. Like legitimately just an asshole. He makes snide comments at me all the damn time. And I’m getting so tired of it. He’s supposed to be one of my best friends and he’s just turned into a bully.”
You frown at him and reach across the table for his hand, “I’m really sorry. I hate that you’re in that situation. Why doesn’t he just drop out if he doesn’t want to do it?”
San shrugs sheepishly, “Because… I might have convinced our instructor to make it a part of our grade so that no one could drop out…”
Your eyes widen and you bring your free hand to your mouth, laughing softly. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t laugh… How did you manage that? I mean, I guess I’d be a little mad too, but I wouldn't go as far as to bully one of my best friends over something like that.”
“I really appreciate that,” he whispers, squeezing your hand.
