The other passage, from the 'Dialectics,' explains that 'caring about oneself is not in order to use oneself. Not like caring about a horse' (MB A7). We care about the welfare of a horse because we use it as a means of transportation. By contrast, the morally pertinent form of care is to care about others for their own sake.
