“Woman and Man with Dog” by Gabriele Münter, 1918

Münter’s art is expressionist, as far as I can tell, which I feel to be an art movement kind of in my... zone of interest? It’s not always my thing, but sometimes there are some really fun ones, like this one. Jasmine and I found this painting in a museum somewhere, but I forgot where it was and Münter seems to be relatively obscure, so I can’t even figure out if she actually gave it a German (Deutsch) title.

As you can tell from the title, this is a picture of a woman (sitting), a man (playing violin), and a dog (also sitting (in an avocado...?)). There also seems to be a house on a hill in the distance, across some water and bordered by some mountains.

When I first saw this, I thought that the eponymous characters were in a house or something, but then I saw the background elements and thought that maybe they were actually outside by a beach. I have now decided to combine these thoughts: They are under the roof of a tall tent thing by the beach, perhaps enjoying a day out while not really acting like they’re enjoying a day out.

It’s a cute picture, I think. There’s a lot of story you could give this picture, like maybe about what the characters are doing, or who lives in the house across the water, or who the mysterious figure is who’s watching them from the boat.
