The BoP agreed to the terms set for the meeting with surprising ease. More than one person had expected them to argue when M’Baku demanded that the meeting occur in Gorilla City instead of Birnin Zana. Although last-minute, an invitation to attend and mediate the proceedings was extended to Pack Wakanda as a show of good faith. M’Baku’s conversation with T’Challa two days ago had grated on his nerves. The other pack leader’s interest in the logistics of the meeting had been unwavering, his questions seemingly endless. It wore on M’Baku’s already waning sanity. He’d wanted every detail to be combed over—every precaution taken—so there was no chance of a conflict.

“Our packs are allied. Whatever war you start with the Birds of Paradise could affect Wakanda as a whole,” had been the reasoning used.

Chapter 1: A Deal At The CrossRoads

Summary: M’Baku is an alpha that knows exactly what he wants and how to get it. His pack has survived and thrived on their traditional values and strength. When Inyanga, an independent and tenacious omega from an outside pack ends up inheriting a parcel of his land in her late brother's will, M'Baku learns that the land contains a precious family heirloom. Inyanga will do whatever it takes to keep her brother's family safe. M'Baku will do whatever he can to recover the lost heirloom. As their battle of wills comes to a head, M'Baku decides to take the easy route and take the land by force…and Inyanga along with it.

This was seriously some bullshit. Inya usually considered herself one of the lucky ones. She had managed to break away from these kinds of stifling, patriarchal and alpha-based pecking orders that came with living in a pack. She’d even happily used that privilege to help any omegas willing to do the same; and she’s pretty damn successful at it too. Going undercover into a pack and helping people gain freedom from oppressive alphas was something that brought her peace…

But the problem with leaving a pack was that- at some point- they always caught up with you somewhere- somehow down the line. It was like the fates just couldn’t let her be.

Case in point, as she sat in the cushy conference chair watching the attorney approach, her suspicions of this being more than just a simple conversation about a legal issue was confirmed. The beta attorney had walked into the room followed closely by an alpha male that she easily recognized. The silence in the room was only disturbed by the shuffling of the chairs across from her; One became occupied by the attorney…and the other was occupied by Alpha T’Challa, Leader of Pack Wakanda.

T’Challa was not alone. Standing tall and proud at attention behind his back were two more alphas; both were female and pack enforcers. Just the presence of the three alphas' scents mixing so strongly together in this small space made Inya’s hair stand on end.

Inya opened her eyes somewhere early the next morning. A quick glance showed that her vision was a bit blurry and her center of gravity felt off. But the warm body pressed against her back smelled familiar. She took a few slow deep breaths to try and center the incoordination her mind felt with her limbs. The scent of the person in bed with her slowly became recognizable.

Inya’s stay in Birnin Zana was amazing; the room she got assigned to in the citadel was gorgeous and the view from her window to the central business district had a clear shot all the way to the south lake docks. She was up earlier than she needed to be but it was hard for her to sleep in a place that made her feel so oddly unsafe . The idea of someone trying to jump her in her sleep couldn’t be shaken so she only managed to sleep until 6am. It didn’t matter too much once she got up and did her normal routine of a thirty minute stretch and workout session before taking a shower and ordering room service.

Her bags had been returned by the time she’d gotten back to her room yesterday after getting her blood drawn and peeing in a cup. Recalling that scenario did nothing for her mood this morning. She spitefully hoped that every trace of whatever narcotics she had in her system was found by some stuffy over-analysing traditional lab tech. It served them right for snooping in her private life, honestly.

Being curled into the safety of M'Baku’s chest provided a tranquility and peace that Inyanga was unsure she could achieve through conventional means. They’d both slept soundly, his arm draped securely over her hips where a pillow kept the heating pad pressed against her lower abdomen. It had turned itself off somewhere in the last hour but that was fine. The cramping had settled to something more tolerable now and left her to bask in the gloriousness of M’Baku’s scent.

The mixture of alpha pheromones thickening the air had put her in a hazy sort of dreamstate, prompting her to stay nice and warm in his embrace. Being so comfortable with having him so close was—on some level—a bit startling. It was rare that she ever shared her nest with anyone; oftentimes opting to construct them in the confines of her bedroom, away from her previous beta roommates. Was this what it felt like to have an alpha’s full attention?...

It was horrifyingly addictive. She felt so connected to him through the bond at the moment that she could sense how far away he was when he got up to go to the bathroom.

Yet again, Inya was restless.

Sitting in the suite for the past three days with nothing to do other than watch TV and sleep had begun to wear on her now that her period was waning. The only person who came and went was Ekene. What stopped her from going crazy during the uncomfortable downtime was M’Baku’s enduring presence. She didn’t want to think too hard about why having him so close-by was such a soothing thing. He had spent most of his time being just as lazy as she was; lounging in her nest and enjoying the way she wrapped herself around him whenever his scent became too much for her to ignore.

The growing part of her that had attached itself to him through the thick threaded roots of the bond was very happy with him staying put. But Inya’s mind was beginning to burn with unanswered questions again. And M’Baku’s caring and sharing mood tempted her to start a conversation while things were still civil between them.

She waited until he’d gotten out of the shower and came into the kitchenette before steeling her resolve and committing to speaking up. However—a problem quickly arose. The moment Inya looked up and saw him fixing coffee without a shirt on, she forgot how to speak. Her attention moved to the broad smooth expanse of his back, lingering there as she logged every dip curve freckle and mole in his deep skin.

Inya followed M'Baku down to the kitchen. It was a sizable room that seemed equipped with just about any form of appliance one might need to make any dish they pleased. There was an island with barstools but he gestured for her to take a seat at the table near a large bay window. One look at the outside world made Inya nearly choke on her own breath. She wasn’t sure what she had expected, but it had not been the visage of a sprawling tree lined mountain side.

The view out the window perfectly framed the overlook of a rocky drop-off that likely went down a very long way. The ground below in the distance seemed to be almost basin-shaped with massive trees filling it to capacity. Directly across the basin of trees are more mountain-sides. They dot the land with trees before quickly fading out into snowy peaks that go up farther than she can actually see. There are clearly more homes sparsely decorating the mountains in the distance, their geometric wooden shape seems to be carved into the cliffs and the smoke from their chimneys is readily apparent.

Jabariland was a jarring change from Wakandan scenery, but not as drastic from what she saw in the wilderness back home. Still, Inya had never quite been up as high as a mountaintop before. The thought of how isolated she now was made her heart clench.

Was there even a way down from here if she got out?

The only real indication of how upset M'Baku was after Dr. Uloma’s visit was his notable silence. Inya wouldn’t have minded the quiet if it didn’t come with his intense brooding and abrupt temper. She could feel it tugging like a rope, taut and thick against any counterpressure. Navigating it was just like slipping and having the fibres burn and cut your palms on the way down. He gave both her and Ekene nothing but curt and to-the-point commands the next morning after announcing that the lockdown had been lifted. His attitude was a complete one-eighty from the way he’d acted a few days prior.

Inya hesitated to admit that it made her nervous. With everyone free to leave and go back to their own domain, she couldn’t help but think about how isolated she would be again.

Here at the stronghold, there were eyes everywhere, watching to gossip about every little thing. It tended to make people stay on their best behavior, and that included M’Baku. Back at their home, there was more anonymity. But here, she wasn’t doomed to be stuck with only M'Baku and Ekene as her only source of company.

Would things change now?
