M1 Patch Presents Immortalx
2018 marks the inaugural season of M1 Patch! A Theatre Festival of Artful Play where The Theatre Practice invites everyone into their creative space to play and enjoy an international festival of theatre that transcends age, language, and genres.
The play for the day is Immortalx 《XX神童》 which first debuted in 2007. This beloved play is inspired by Chinese mythology and features three young immortals searching for their place in life. The action-comedy is updated with modern references, and is directed by The Theatre Practice’s Artistic Director, Kuo Jian Hong.
I love the innovative 360-degree stage with creative lighting, sound, and visuals which allowed the audience to fully immerse themselves in the play and be a part of the action that is happening all around the theatre.
The story definitely drew inspiration from Harry Potter featuring a magical school with a trio of young students comprising of the inquisitive Mysterious Aw, the brainy Ray Girl, and the comedic Poppy Chang. However, the tale slowly establishes its own unique local identity with a fun, action-packed tale of discovery and adventure packed with colorful Chinese deities and witty Singlish dialogue.
