San Diego marches honor Black women’s struggles

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in Jamestown, Va., in 1619.

San Diego celebrated Women’s History Month with two Black women’s marches: the 1619 National Celebration of Black Women (1619 NCBW) and the Second Annual March for Black Women-San Diego (M4BWSD). Both events were organized and led by Black women.

This is work that we have done throughout the years in providing emergency financial support to Black Womxn in crisis. In light of COVID-19 and the way the systems are once again failing Black Womxn, we knew we wanted to show up for our larger community and share that this resource is available. Hundreds of people took to the streets with us on March 8th saying they would love us through action and have been waiting on next steps. This is a DIRECT ACTION that would uplift all four of our demands. We do this in legacy of our ancestors who created networks of support out of necessity and love. We show up for each other because we know the system will not prioritize us and our struggles are bound together. I am off social media on Sundays and Mondays so I am hella late in sharing these photos and videos from Sunday’s AMAZING #marchforblackwomensandiego! We was out there!! I was blown away by the participation, the clear message, the order and organization and the overwhelming sense of community. It was great to see old and new friends. I am proud to be a woman.
