TOXIC IDOL
For years Joe Perry and Steven Tyler have talked about the infamy of the 'toxic twins'. Now though, it can be severely misunderstood and misconstrued. To many people, they may chuckle and think it is reference to Steven's new job on American Idol. Are the 'toxic twins' he and Jennifer Lopez? Sadly, and much to Joe Perry's anguish over Tyler's decision to host the show, he may have been right. After the debut of the new American Idol, its viewers dropped the biggest in the shows 10 year history, the highest loss in the 'young viewer' range.
On the other hand, the network is claiming that Steven Tyler is the 'wild man' of American Idol. Again...help us out, how can Steve be the wild man when he has already open stated that the new American Idol is about being nice. Somethings got to give, one way or another. Can Steven Tyler truly discover the next musical legend...as he says he can? Tyler himself said in a recent interview with Billboard, "I just believed that the only way that you could make it was to work hard in the clubs, smell the sweat, sing in smoke and do the grind" Now he seems to think different.
Joe Perry thinks that hosting American idol is one step above Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The 'Snobs seem to agree with Joe. It is no wonder that as soon as the new season has started supposedly Joe is nowhere to be found. is that a coincidence?
According to Steve, before he got the Idol gig, he was actually going to go on a speaking tour, talking to colleges and making 'lots of money'. That all changed when he got a text, asking him to consider judging on the TV show. He said he joked about how the ratings were. Then, Steven said he started asking questions and when he found out who was being looked at he then decided, "I always thought J-Lo would be good. I thought that would be the perfect match up".
In his own words, J.Lo clinched the deal.
Steve's ego was pumped. He was the key, he is what America needs to point it in the right direction in choosing its next superstar,
I certainly would know when someone comes on for real. I could hear their soul and their hearts -- their putting-it-forth like a madman, the star quality. Because I'm a peripheral visionary, you know? I don't usually look straight on at something. I like to savor what I don't see.
So be it. Steven Tyler and his wild antics are going to be the rabbit that American Idol pulls out of its hat, even if Joe Perry cannot force himself to watch. Steven thinks it is going to resurrect his career, even if it costs Aerosmith theirs. You can imagine, some people, especially those in the band, do not like this prospect. To them, especially Joe, this is a step you take when you have no career. This is the bottom of the barrel...or one step up from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Another outspoken skeptic of Tyler's decision is Kid Rock. Not that his opinion matters too much, but he is speaking out of a long-time admiration of Aerosmith. he thinks this is a stupid decision too. Steve said he thinks Kid Rock is just lashing out. they had a brief talk at some awards ceremony and Steven Tyler dismissed Kid Rock with an air of arrogance, saying "It's television. I've never done this and it's going to be fun, and if he thinks for a minute that it's going to take my career down... I want what he's smoking"
Tyler defends himself by saying he doesn't need to "...be validated by someone's opinions or show". To prove his point, he takes the spot of a judge on a television show. he says no matter what Aerosmith thinks, he is in it 'for life'.
It is true that the new season has started, and it is not off to a good start. It will be interesting to see just what happens. It was Steven's reputation for drug addled antics which helped garner him a 'wild' reputation, yet now, he is aiming to be a nice guy. Why does anyone want to watch Steve Tyler cut up with J.Lo and be nice? What teenager is going to listen to this wrinkled old man who looks like one of mom's weird friends? they would much rather listen to A Jonas or Eminem (sad to say). How many contestants have even heard an Aerosmith record, much less own one? Odds are much better they do actually own some Jennifer Lopez though.
What would Ma Kin do?
In his defense, and hoping to protect his legacy, Steve says,
I've got to keep reminding myself that we're looking for an "American Idol" -- something that's so fucking good-and that's exactly how I judge myself and the songs I write with Joe Perry.
(sound of coughing faintly heard...)
